Hello all,

DH and I are keen gardeners and currently expecting DC1 (sex as yet unknown).

I am very keen on plant names and honestly am struggling to balance a name I love with a plant I love (for example I adore Rhododendrons as plants but wouldn't wan't to saddle a child with that as a name, whereas Poppy and Daisy are very cute names from a baby but don't particularly meet my horticultural tastes.) I am looking for people's immediate, extremely judgemental and biased opinions on what they would think of a girl named 1. Ivy 2. Ivy-Rose 3. Dahlia 4. Violet 5. Violet-Rose 6. Azalea 7. Amaranth.

Suggestions for boys names other than Ash very welcome.

Hyacinth Bouquet?

I could never view a Dahlia with anything but trepidation. She might be the nicer of the Aunts, but she was still fairly intimidating with her endless tasks for poor hapless Bertie.

What about some of the Latin names for the plant families Op? Could make some good sounding names eg
Quercus (oak)
Salix (willow)
Hedera (ivy)
Ilex (holly)
etc etc

When I was little one of my mother's friends had a lovely dog called Briar Rose. Silly name for a dog, but great for a child, IMHO.
Percy for a boy, after Percy Thrower, naturally 😁
My own daughter is Fuchsia. She frequently has to correct people's spelling...

  1. Ivy - no, because clingy and poison connotations
  2. Ivy-Rose - ditto, plus double barrels always looks a bit cutesy. Rose on its own is beautiful though.
  3. Dahlia - no, some people will think it's Delia, others that you're trying too hard.
  4. Violet - not super keen.
  5. Violet-Rose - see previous comments.
  6. Azalea - No.
  7. Amaranth - interesting, but I would prefer Amaryllis.

You could call a boy William for Sweetwilliam?

Of those I only really like Violet. I hate Ivy and don’t understand why it’s so popular, but that’s just me!

I saw the name Herb last week - could also be Herbie?
