Firstname surname bother

Hi all.. Pregnant with a baby boy. Our surname ends in 'son'. It would then be weird to give him a first name that ends in 'son', wouldn't it? Think: Dawson Anderson (not the actual names)!

Sorry op, I think it sounds a bit clunky

A bit 'Edward Woodward' or 'Johnson-Thompson'

If the name is something like Jackson or Harrison, you could use Jack or Harry.

Pemba · 14/09/2025 17:15

Like Harrison Davidson? Yes, it wouldn't really work.

The names that end in 'son' are generally those surnames for first names that seem to be popular. I don't like them in general. Instead of the above example, I would choose Harry Davidson, much nicer.

Thanks all. It isn't one that could be abbreviated unfortunately. It was just one that I liked but discounted straight away for the reason of 'son' 'son' sounding odd. Just thought I'd circle back and ask on here today to make sure I was right!

Can't say without knowing what the names are, but -son names as first names are a bit looked down on.
I think 'Edward Woodward' is cool, but you need a certain personality to get away with it.

Something like Mason Anderson seems a bit naff.

Yes I’m afraid your instinct is correct!

Agree

Thanks again all. My DS1 has my favourite name already so I'm struggling this time!

I agree with pps that it would probably sound quite clunky. Perhaps if you shared the first name you like, we might be able to make some similar suggestions that could work better?

OhMyGiddyAnt · 14/09/2025 23:03

I think it sounds ok. In fact I like it although it depends on the actual names
