My husband and I have very different taste in names, and are really butting heads over what to name our daughter. We also have a long and unusual surname to consider.

Here is the full list, some are his favourites and some are mine so I'm keen to get some unbiased responses to them.

Daphne
Octavia
Tamara
Celine
Helena (Hel-ee-nuh)
Dorothy
Vera
Beatrix (Bea or Trixie)
Catherine (Kitty)
Clara
Tabitha
Margaret (Maggie)
Penelope
Maud

We are really struggling and as such have gone a bit off-piste in a desperate attempt to find something we can agree on.

Thanks in advance.

You come across as being unpleasant.

Helena (Hel-eena) is a family name. It follows the same pattern as Serena, Athena etc.

There's no point replying to her, she clearly has a strong need to always have the last word - if that is what gives her some form of satisfaction, so be it.

Sorry OP, derailed your post a bit. I guess my main take is if you like Helena, don't be put off by the pronunciation issues (unless it's something that would really bother you). For my part, I like that name in particular along with Clara and Maggie. I hope you find a name you and your husband can compromise on!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/09/2025 13:35

Clara, Daphne, Celine are my top 3

FourIsNewSix · 16/09/2025 13:49

Nice list.
When I read though it, I'm thinking whether Gwendolyn wouldn't work for you. It has similar feel for me, not the top of the statistics, classical but not boring.

And with great NN potential, Gwen, Wendy, Dolly..

PurpleChrayn · 16/09/2025 13:56

Vera is due a comeback.

Baninarama · 16/09/2025 14:02

@Plastictreees , grow up.

Says you, arguing with a stranger over the internet over a name

Get a bloody life, stop quoting me for attention and stop re-railing the thread.

@Dee51121 , I agree with you.

My favourites are Daphne, Vera, Maud.

Daphne - Love it! Graceful, beautiful.
Octavia - Nice but I would wonder if she was your 8th child.
Tamara - Nice but doesn’t stand out to me.
Celine - I’m not a fan.
Helena - Too frilly for me, but I love Helen.
Dorothy - I love this name but dislike Dot/Dotty which would stop me choosing it.
Vera - I absolutely love this name and wish it would come back in popularity. I love that for some the meaning is faith/truth, and in Nordic languages it means “to be”.
Beatrix - Too twee for me.
Catherine - Nice, classic, but I would use Katherine for Kitty.
Clara - Really dislike this one.
Tabitha - I can only think of cats.
Margaret - Nice, classic, strong.
Penelope - Strong dislike.
Maud - Lovely, regal, beautiful.

I have never heard of Helena being pronounced Hel-ee-nuh. And this is my name!

Multiple posters have said the same thing.

There were two Helenas in my year in school in Ireland.

One was Helen-a, and the other was Hel-ee-na.

The Hel-ee-na pronunciation isn't unusual in Ireland.

Both pronunciations are acceptable.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 17/09/2025 03:04

Clara, Celine, Helena or Daphne

Then you’ve not paid much attention to the world around you. It’s pretty common.

The names I like best from your list:
Daphne
Octavia
Vera
Clara
Tabitha
Penelope

OldieButBaddie · 17/09/2025 18:25

My honest opinions as they were asked for

Daphne - I quite like it but was MIL's name and she loathed it!
Octavia - Nope - too Jilly Cooper
Tamara - a bit snobby sounding (based only on someone I know called that)
Celine - Dion (prefer Celeste but then Barbar)
Helena (Hel-ee-nuh) - quite like this but she will have it mispronounced her entire life which could be annoying
Dorothy - like Dotty but not the full name a huge amount
Vera - what has become of you?
Beatrix (Bea or Trixie) - Nice, Bea better than Trixie
Catherine (Kitty) - a bit dull
Clara - a cow's name IMO (though I like it pronounced Claira rather than Clahra)
Tabitha - twee
Margaret (Maggie) - Tory
Penelope - fun but Penny I don't like much
Maud - nicer with an e

KayEmAy · 17/09/2025 19:55

I LOVE Octavia

MsSmartShoes · 17/09/2025 19:58
