We are due our second boy in November. Finding it tricky to pick a boys name!

We have discussed Cooper as one option. What is everyone’s opinion of this name?

I quite like it. Not so out there that he will spend his life having to spell it for people, not common so there’s a risk of them being 5 in his school year.
It’s unlikely he’ll ever find his name on a pen in a souvenir shop though! How would you feel about his mates constantly calling him “Coop” ?

Lindy2 · 08/09/2025 19:19

I quite like it. A bit different but not too unusual. Coop is a likely nickname though.

JillyGiraffe · 08/09/2025 19:26

I’m personally not a fan of surnames as first names, but if you like it go for it! Is it similar to big brother’s name?

BoleynMemories13 · 08/09/2025 19:27

I'm not a fan of surnames as first names. I only know of dogs called Cooper so it's a no from me.

SchnizelVonKrumm · 08/09/2025 19:28

I think it's awful, sorry! Plus it rhymes with pooper...

Toptoou · 08/09/2025 19:29

I like most names but hate this name sorry

Pooper! That’s very true!

JillyGiraffe · 08/09/2025 19:34

How about Raphael nn Raffy? Christopher nn Kit?

SquaredPaper · 08/09/2025 19:36

I don’t like ‘craft’/job names as first names — like Hunter, Cooper etc.

MidnightGloria · 08/09/2025 19:37

Not unless you aspire for him to make barrels.

DontMowMyMeadow · 08/09/2025 19:41

We had a rabbit called Cooper. I've never met a human with that first name.

A cooper is a barrel-maker, hence used as a surname.

Not unless you aspire for him to make barrels.

I know a cooper. He’s called Iarla, though.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/09/2025 20:06

A Cooper is a person who makes (beer) barrels.
So it's a no from me.

youalright · 08/09/2025 20:08

I know a few kids called Cooper Its not bad its just meh

narcASD · 08/09/2025 20:13

My daughter has one in her class, he gets called coops, I think it’s a dreadful name but that’s just my opinion

LargeChestofDrawers · 08/09/2025 20:16

Cooper means barrel-maker. It's one of those surnames that people chose/were known by hundreds of years ago because it was their profession. Like Potter, Butcher, Baker, Smith, Carter, Cartwright, Falconer, Cook, Chandler, Hunter.

It's difficult working in schools sometimes when children have interchangeable forenames and surnames, like Harrison Cooper, or Cooper Harrison. Is the child Thomas Harrison, or is it Harrison Thomas? Cameron Parker, or is it Parker Cameron? Thomas Ellis, or Ellis Thomas? Carter Elliott, or Elliott Carter? Always tricky to get the right name in the right column of a spreadsheet.

So think carefully about your surname.

JillyGiraffe · 08/09/2025 19:32

Pooper! That’s very true!

Your nn Kit rhymes with Shit - come one ladies really.. pooper?? Are we 6 or something? Many names rhyme with something daft if we put our childish thought behind it.

OP if you like it, go for it. It’s not too out there and not one of the overly used names at present (Kit and Raffy is offered on most boy name threads these days for example)

Mutability · 08/09/2025 20:17

I can’t help but be influenced by the fact I know 2 dogs named Cooper. Also, I’m afraid I think it’s a bit chavvy.

HugoYorway · 08/09/2025 20:20

Super dooper Hmm

Itchyfeetkeepmemoving · 08/09/2025 20:21

My friend’s very lovely spaniel is called Cooper

Bubnov · 08/09/2025 20:23

Twin peaks reference?

Needspaceforlego · 08/09/2025 20:24

I quite like it. And I'm pretty traditional when it comes to names

2chocolateoranges · 08/09/2025 20:25

Cooper is a name we considered.

my grandpa was a cooper and my dh’s footballing hero was Davie Cooper so we did think about it but decided on another name,

GreenAndWhiteStripes · 08/09/2025 20:26

I know one Cooper, he's 15. I like it.

HannahHamptonsGloves · 08/09/2025 20:27

Yes sorry I immediately thought that's a dog's name.
