We are due our second boy in November this year. Picking a name has been so difficult!

What is everyone’s opinion on Ashton?

There’s something about it I think is nice for an Autumn baby. Probably easy for them to say as a toddler. Familiar but not too common. Opinions please :)

I’ve taught an Ashton, he was very pleasant as a teen.

RuthW · 08/09/2025 18:15

It’s quite nice.

Breakfastpotatoes · 08/09/2025 18:17

I like it. I don't know any.

Firsttimebabymummy · 08/09/2025 18:19

Really like it. Don't know any.

ginasevern · 08/09/2025 18:20

Yes, it's pleasant and not common (in the sense of overused). It would be shortened to Ash which is also quite nice.

Alexandrine · 08/09/2025 18:22

I prefer Biblical Asher or maybe even just Ash (like the tree) as personally I’m less keen on place names or surnames as given names. However those trends are quite popular at the moment, so I can imagine little Ashton would fit in fine at school. I can’t see any obvious problems with the name.

CurlsLDN · 08/09/2025 18:22

I know a teenage one, I like it

CaroleLandis · 08/09/2025 18:27

i knew a poor boy who was saddled with name Asher Price and was called Asda Price at school which was funny as he was a nasty bully.

Ash, Ashton, Asher - I don’t like any of those names but Ashley is ok at a push .

SausageRoll2020 · 08/09/2025 18:28

This is probably location dependant but I just think of the town Ashton under Lyne, which is normally just referred to as Ashton.
There's a big IKEA there, but other wise it looks pretty grim and run down.

overmydeadbody · 08/09/2025 18:35

It's one of the ninja kids, my sons were obsessed with them a few years ago!

He's a nice guy, so my associations are positive 😊

Emanwenym · 08/09/2025 18:59

Ashton-under-Lyne was my first thought and it has been in the news recently.
Ash/Ashley is dated, I don't like GnAsher.

We live in Scotland so totally unaware of this! Hadn’t actually heard of this place 🙈What has been posted?

Under Lyne or in makerfield

A place name not a child name

Ineedmybru · 08/09/2025 19:10

We nearly used Ashton but had a girl. I like the soft 'sh' sound. I don't know any but know an Aston and he's lovely.

IfHeWantedToHeWould · 08/09/2025 20:51

There’s an Ashton at my DC’s school, it’s nice. Makes charge from the endless Georges and Harrys.

Needspaceforlego · 08/09/2025 20:52

My initial thoughts were its different to Ashley.
Then reading the place name comments I can't unsee it "....ton" is also an old version on town. Lots of places end in ton Milton, Johnston, Craigton, etc

But I'm really liking Asher.

Norastroud · 08/09/2025 20:58

I really like the name Ashton - I actually know one in his 30’s & I always thought it was a cool but not common name.

I guess it’s worked well for Ashton Kutcher!

TheMAFSfan · 08/09/2025 21:00

Ashton in Makerfield or Ashton under Lyne

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/09/2025 21:51

There is a place in Bristol also called Ashton. My now ex husband is Ashton (he is 55) so it is not a new name per se but also not normally a surname as he was asked a million times. It is also both a male and female name in Australia too.

His name is actually Christopher and his middle name Ashton :)

TartanMammy · 08/09/2025 23:14

I know an Asher which I think is lovely.

Ashton just makes me think 'kutcher' (the actor) or 'lane' (the infamous Glasgow uni pub crawl)

Ketzele · 09/09/2025 00:23

I know a teenage Ashton. Nice lad. I prefer Asher.

Ashton is handsome and unusual.
