Are Amelie and Annabel too similar to have as names of sisters please? We already have an Amelie and we are looking for a name for her sister. Thanks

I think they fit beautifully together, and compliment each other.
Two of my favourite names.

mathanxiety · 07/09/2025 16:28

They're close but not too close imo.

FuzzyWolf · 07/09/2025 16:29

I think they are lovely names and fine as siblings.

girlmum6 · 07/09/2025 18:03

Thanks all. And you don’t think it’s better for siblings to have different initials?

What about Isabelle? Similar to Annabel but less Amma and Anna sounding at the start.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. The beginning of Amelie and Annabel are much too similar, audibly, imo.

Amelie and Isabel would make a beautiful sibset though.

My mum always said to avoid kids having names starting with the same letter because when they're teens and you get a letter for Miss A [Surname] how do you know who to give it to? Just go through all their private post to decide who to pass it to?

Bloodyscarymary · 07/09/2025 19:09

I love the name Annabel but the reason I would be cautious is it will make it really hard for your friends to remember your kid’s names. I think people will get them mixed up and be always having to de-brief on their way over about the names and who is who 😆

Yes. I had the same initials as my sister and she kept opening my post when we were old enough to receive it.

With your girls piece of post arrives for Ms A Surname...who's it for...

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/09/2025 21:25

I think they’re lovely together if you don’t mind the same initials. I think the post thing is less of an issue these days because so much is sent electronically now.

Fair point regarding post. But some things are still sent by post.

But that didn't stop my sister from voting under my name, by mistake once. She went to the polling station pointed out her name (didn't take a polling card.l) voted under the wrong name and hadn't noticed. They had selected the wrong name

.And then, when I showed up with my polling card, they denied me my vote because I had already voted.

It can cause issues.

I mean, they're nice names, but they're all a bit same same and cutesy. I choose something less similar.

TheaBrandt1 · 07/09/2025 22:39

No the post will be confusing when they are older. Too similar

Annabel is a timeless classic. Not cutesy at all IMO. Also, whyyyyy is everyone trying to be so unique when it comes to naming their children?

not trying to be unique. You can't really be unique unless you completely make up a name. Which no one has suggested here.So you have completely made an illogical point.

There are more choices than three syllable girls names, beginning with an A.

Annabel is cutesy. It finishes with bell.

How about Alexandra. Still another A, but it sounds completely different. Badass nickname alex. I'd love to have been called that.

Am and An at the beginning sound too similar.

Elephantangel1991 · 07/09/2025 22:54

Doubt there'll much post by the time they're older. Deliveries tend to use the full first name, at least mine do. Annabel is fine, Isabel also good.

Alexandrine · 07/09/2025 23:22

I prefer different initials for same sex siblings. It’s not the end of the world, but you will still occasionally get post addressed to Miss A Surname, even today imo (they don’t always use middle initials).

For that reason, I’d be tempted to go for something similarly French sounding for Amelie’s sibling but with a different initial. Isabelle, Charlotte, Esme, Elodie, Eloise, Sophie, Juliet?

No.

There won't be a postal service by the time your DDs are old enough to receive post. It won't make any difference to their everyday lives.

By the time Amelie and Annabel get to voting age, they will be carrying some sort of biometric ID, and the issue of voting merely by saying you are the person whose name appears on a printed list won't come up.

The two are lovely names. I would choose a more different name but just my opinion.
Amelie and ..
Isabelle
Madeleine
Susanna
Louise
Adrienne

LivingTheDreamish · 08/09/2025 03:14

I also think Isobel (or one of the various spellings) pairs better with Amelie. Annabel is phonetically too close to Amelie.

And you're generally this type of poster who thinks she knows everything I see your name so often.

That was chose one example of how annoying it is to have a sister with the same initials it caused problems way before that.

You know everything and you never let anyone forget it.Do you.

Mydadsbirthday · 08/09/2025 21:49

I can't believe people are worried about post, my teens and I all have the same initials and I can probably count the number of times they've received post over the years on the fingers of one hand. It's a total non issue.

Obviously I get more post but I know it's mine generally!

I think the two names are nice together. Unless they get shortened? Amie and Annie?!

Calliopespa · 11/09/2025 14:46

I think the Amma/Anna sounds are too similar to be honest.
