Thoughts on Rowan for a baby girl?

Hello! We are a Korean-British couple and we need a name for our baby girl, who is due this autumn.

We've been looking for a name that sounds lovely in both Korean and English and we quite like 'Rowan' atm.

It means 'paving the way' in Korean and it’s also androgynous. But many of our British colleagues have said that it sounds more like a boy's name - and of course, they've all mentioned Mr Bean.

I'm wondering how it would sound to young British people..!

Good name for both sexes.
Also, there is Rowena.

NewLifter · 06/09/2025 09:52

It's a beautiful name

CreationNat1on · 06/09/2025 10:01

Beautiful choice

Toptoou · 06/09/2025 13:14

Love it! Lovely name for you little girl

Tinytigertail · 06/09/2025 13:21

It's a lovely unisex name IMO.

LittleMi55Nobody · 06/09/2025 13:27

i think that if you need validation for a name from complete strangers then its not the name for your wee one...go with what YOU love

I love it. I know both male and female Rowans and think it's one of the few unisex names that genuinely works for both.
I also love Rowenna for a girl (Row - EN - uh) but I would worry about people mispronouncing it her whole life! (I'm less keen on Rowena pn Row EEN uh)

Why is the last syllable uh and not a?

Togetheragain45 · 06/09/2025 13:30

It's a lovely name for a girl.

Emanwenym · 06/09/2025 13:31

@Hollyhobbi , because -a/-ah endings tend to sound like that.
It's an unstressed syllable, so it's a shwa (uh) sound.

Rowan is Row-un not Row-ahn for the same reason. Rowana would be Row-ah-na, because the first a is in a stressed syllable.

Not in Ireland they don’t!

@Hollyhobbi , I said 'tend to' and OP asked how it would sound to young British people.

I’m Irish and disagree actually.
I’d say Row-un too. It’s the first syllable in Rowan that’s stressed, at least in my Irish accent. But it probably varies a bit.

bigsoftcocks · 21/01/2026 15:16

Love it

HappyAsASandboy · 21/01/2026 17:06

I love it. I know a female Rowan and always thought it was a female name until Rowan Atkinson!

Beautiful, classic, great meaning, works in both your languages …. sounds like the right name to me!

NewGirlInTown · 21/01/2026 23:17

Lovely.

biggestcatmom · 21/01/2026 23:39

spiderlight · 21/01/2026 23:51

I love it. We would have used it if we'd had another baby, boy or girl.

rainingsnoring · 22/01/2026 05:46

I like it!

Pettenell · 22/01/2026 05:47

Rowan is a really lovely name! Great choice - attractive nature name, easy to pronounce, not over-used, and with the lovely Korean connection and meaning it sounds perfect.

Marcipix · 22/01/2026 21:44

Lovely for a girl.

User0311 · 22/01/2026 21:46

Beautiful name

Evaporateandlisten · 22/01/2026 21:48

I know a female Rowan who is in her 60s and a male Rowan who is in his 40s.
It’s a lovely name.

I also love Rowena for a girl.

Coffeeishot · 22/01/2026 21:49

I wanted to call Dd Rowan dh really didn't like it, said it was too "out there" anyway i think it is a lovely name for a girl and the Korean meaning is fab don't think it is a particular masuline name either.
