need help with deciding on a name - his sister is Sofia.
I am really drawn to a name beginning with L. Short and sweet and then I will put a middle name but I’ll decide that later. Just a disclaimer- I have a friend with twins who has had a boy and a girl called Sophia and Luca and also my husbands cousins son is called Luca so I am not sure if I can or should use that name although I do love it. (I named my daughter Sofia before she named her daughter the same)
I also don’t mind that these names are popular- as long as we like them then that’s fine by me!

liam
leo
luca
lucas

Don't think you can really use Luca sadly...be a bit weird. Although my fav from your list 😩

CarpetKnees · 30/08/2025 16:19

I was going to suggest Luca, as it does sit well with Sofia so I think it comes down to how close a friend this is.

Someone you've known sine you were both 2, and who you still see regularly and is very much part of your life ? Then no.

Someone you are friends with 'circumstantially' ? (Baby group or neighbour or someone you know through an activity you do) Then it doesn't matter. No-one owns a name and Luca is a popular name at the moment. You didn't 'copy' her choice of Sofia. You probably won't be interconnected in a couple of years anyway.

Moreteaandchocolate · 30/08/2025 16:19

Leo is my favourite, but I like all the names on your list.

ResusciAnnie · 30/08/2025 16:23

Hmm I’d choose Luca tbh unless she’s likely to be a lifelong friend. And even then I’d probably say ‘hey, we’re thinking of Luca for this baby, sorry if you think that’s weird! We’ve both got great taste hey?’. It’s a great name.

After all, she can’t really have a problem with it - she ‘copied’ your baby name. Unless you met her after you both had Sofias, in which case she’s not been your friend for ages and ages.

I met her a couple of years ago I probably meet her once every month or 2 months. She isn’t a very close friend. I think she will find it weird though. I don’t know why it gives me anxiety to use that name

Imagineallthepuppies · 30/08/2025 16:26

My favourite boys name is Lawrence shortened to Laurie.

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/08/2025 17:34

Leo

Silverbirchleaf · 30/08/2025 17:38

Lewis
Luke (too similar?)
Leon
Lysander

lifeontheroundabout · 30/08/2025 17:43

Logan
Lincoln
Louie
Levi

I like Leo and Liam.
Luca is nice too, but there are so many of them also.

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 30/08/2025 17:48

I like:

Ludo instead of Luca
Louis
Laurence
Leo or also Leonard/Leonardo

(Wil)liam

Lots of good ones to choose from.

BoleynMemories13 · 30/08/2025 18:03

Leo goes really well. They're a similar style, similar level of popularity etc.

I personally wouldn't use Luca (you clearly have your own doubts, and if you don't feel 100% comfortable using a name it's really not for you). Lucas offers a nice alternative, which isn't exactly the same as Luca, but I still think I'd choose Leo in your situation.

I don't like Liam, and don't feel it goes as well with Sofia.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 30/08/2025 18:13

Leo. I don't like Luca.

charlieandthechocolatfactory · 30/08/2025 18:45

Leo

Alexandrine · 31/08/2025 00:28

Leo works well as does Luca or Lucas. Leon would work too. For some reason Liam seems a different style to the others (and Sofia imo) - less international sounding maybe?

But if Luca is your absolute fave and she named her daughter Sofia after you’d already named yours, then why can’t you use Luca after she already has too? It’s not as if you had both used Lysander and Seraphina or something - Luca and Sophia/Sofia are Top 10 names (if you add the Sofia/Sophia spellings together), so I bet there are lots of Sofia and Luca sibsets out there. I don’t think husbands cousins son is a problem for the same reason.

Having said all that though, of your picks I’d probably go for Leo - it just sounds very nice with Sofia, the repeated “o” sound links them and they are both so well used internationally.

Leo is smart with Sofia.

Others ..
Leomin
Leon
Leopold
Linden
Lex - Alexander or Lexton on birth cert.

FawnDrench · 31/08/2025 17:55

Liam
Lars
Ludo
Lyle
Luan

DuchessOfNarcissex · 31/08/2025 18:10

Lyle is awful.

Sofia and Lucas is slightly better than Sofia and Luca given your circumstances! If not both Sofia and Leo and Sofia and Liam work nicely too. What letter does your last name begin and end with and how many syllables?

Some other suggestions:
Sofia and Leonard
Sofia and Louis
Sofia and Lake
Sofia and Lewis
Sofia and Logan
Sofia and Lennon
Sofia and Lennox
Sofia and Levi
Sofia and Lachlan
Sofia and Luke
Sofia and Lincoln
Sofia and Laurence/Laurie

LizzieBet14 · 31/08/2025 22:03

Louis
Lachlan

I’m really warming to the idea of using Leo but I’ll definitely add a middle name. Surname begins with T
