I LOVE Nell. But I don't love any of the typical long versions Eleanor, Prunella, Antonella, Helen, Helena, Ellen, Penelope
Can you think of any other longer versions?
Or just go with Nell?

Leonora / Lenora, Leona, Leonie, Eleanora

Elowen

Anneliese

I love Nell as it is too.

GoldenRosebee · 15/08/2025 13:04

Just go for Nell if you want to, it's ok if name isn't to everyone's taste.

HighburyHope · 15/08/2025 14:53

I know a Manuela nn Nell. Also a Fenella but she doesn’t use a nn.

Mumofgirls2017 · 15/08/2025 16:28

Nell is fine on its own but you could work it from a first/ second name combination for example

nancy eloise
Nina Isobel
nova belle

Firsttimebabymummy · 15/08/2025 17:19

Danielle, Noelle, Chanel, Cornelia, Janelle

Alexandrine · 15/08/2025 17:37

Annabel maybe? (after all, the N and the “Elle” sound are there even if nn’s Anna or Belle are more obvious). But I think you are also fine to just go with Nell if you really dislike the obvious Eleanor, Helena, Penelope etc.

However I would give her a more timeless sounding longer middle name (Elizabeth, Catherine, Charlotte, Emily etc) - as the problem with lovely Nell is that it’s a bit trendy at the moment (so may date in future) and also doesn’t really have any nickname options if she does dislike it for any reason in future. A timeless middle name would give her other choices.

Is Elizabeth a longer version?
Also I just read about Lunella and Nellwyn.
What do people think about those?

I’m sorry, Lunella and Nellwyn are names you’ll look back on and realise that pregnancy hormones are STRONG.

I like Hélèn, French pronunciation. I think it’s familiar enough to use if you’re not French.

I like Nellwyn but Nell is just fine. Do you like Nella?

Alexandrine · 15/08/2025 17:50

No I meant Elizabeth would be an excellent classic longer middle name for simple and sweet Nell. I’ve never heard Nell as a nn for Elizabeth personally - I mean in theory you could as in the past people added N to names to get things like Ned for Edward (“miNe EDward”) , so possibly someone somewhere did “miNe ELizabeth” too to get “Nel” but it’s certainly not well known.

Nellwyn looks like a faux Welsh name to me, so I’m not keen and Lunella also looks like an invention too - like Luna + Ella (ala Zoella or similar), so again it’s not my cup of tea. I’d just stick with Nell myself if you don’t like the obvious longer versions.

RuthW · 15/08/2025 17:56

Nell definitely needs something longer. I would go with Eliza or Elizabeth.

fairycupcakes · 15/08/2025 19:24

Penelope is lovely! You can easily get Nell from it ☺️

DarlingHoldMyHand · 15/08/2025 19:27

Annelise?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/08/2025 19:29

Penelope

SupposesRoses · 15/08/2025 19:30

If you love Nell, register her as Nell. No point in having a name that you wouldn’t otherwise consider be her „real“ name

DarlingHoldMyHand · 15/08/2025 19:31

I'd be tempted to just go with Nelle tbh. I personally like it with an e at the end like Portia De Rossi's character in Ally McBeal. It looks more like a full name that way.

NimbleHedgehog · 15/08/2025 20:08

My niece is a Nel on its own! It really suits her.

miniaturepixieonacid · 15/08/2025 20:27

Fenella

Elephantangel1991 · 15/08/2025 22:36

I'd go with just Nell

TTCfirstbabyx · 15/08/2025 22:39

Love Nellie, Nella, Penelope or just Nell... go with your gut! Xx

LOLsurprize · 15/08/2025 22:50

Annelle
Annella

NuffSaidSam · 15/08/2025 22:51

I'd got for either Penelope or Elizabeth. I love Nell, but would also want a longer version.

TerminalMoraine · 15/08/2025 23:52

@Pickandmixxxxxxx
Nella?

Pickandmixxxxxxx · 16/08/2025 00:05

Nelly or Nellie for a nickname ? And is Elizabeth a long form version?

OP posts:
user1492757084 · 16/08/2025 04:42

No Elizabeth is not a long form version of Nell.

Perhaps there is a case or two of Elizabeth being associated such as..
Nancy ELizabeth - NEL
Naomi ELizabeth - NEL

I like Lunella. You might also like ...

Nerida Louise - NEL
Cornelia - NEL
Nancy Luella - NEL
