What are your thoughts on the name Nia?
Is it considered dated?
DH is from Wales, now living near London. Thanks for your views!

She might get called Nina by mistake. That's nice too.

Im in north wales and my daughter is in a Welsh medium primary. There aren’t many Nia’s but there are a couple. It wouldn’t be considered dated where I am, just not as popular as it was 30/40 years ago. The current popular Welsh names seem to be mabli, Cadi, Mali and Lili round us (anything ending in i really). I like Nia. Simple and classy and I can’t imagine anyone randomly pronouncing it as nigh a when it’s pronounced to rhyme with tia, mia etc. I also know a Lia which is nice.

It is a bit dated, I live in North Wales and all the Nias I can think of are 40 plus.

The more I say it the more I like it though! It’s short and pretty. Go for it if you both like it

I like it, and the proudly Welsh Nia that I know is fabulous and we couldn't do without her!

Spidey66 · 12/08/2025 21:53

It’s sweet.

Just don't use a filler Welsh 1960s/70s middle name. Smile
The most popular one back then was Wyn for both girls and boys.
Haf was popular as a middle name then too and would suit a girl born in the summer.

I agree with pp that -i names are popular now, and would add Nansi, Elsi and Lowri (Nancy, Elsi and Laura) to that list.

Mabli, Cadi, Mali and Lili are the equivalents of Mabel, Katie/Cathy, Molly and Lily.

I have a six year old relative called Nia. She's the only one I know though.

BourgeoisBabe · 12/08/2025 22:35

It's new to me but I like it.
