I prefer Rachel as a name but it definitely feels more eighties/early nighties babies.

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/08/2025 20:41

Rachel is lovely - it is dated but she’ll be the only one in her school!

Maria I also find a bit dated but I’m not as keen on it for some reason.

girljulian · 09/08/2025 20:42

Oh, please bring back Rachel!

It was popular in the 80s/90s for a reason -- it is and should be an absolute classic. It's in the Old Testament it's hardly bound to Rachel from Friends!

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 09/08/2025 20:58

Rachel spelled Rachael lovely name

stample · 09/08/2025 21:25

Both nice names, youngest Rachel I know is 11 and youngest Maria is 20 haha

BoleynMemories13 · 09/08/2025 21:39

I know of quite a few young girls called Maria. It's a traditional Catholic name still highly used among certain communities, such as those with Romanian or Spanish backgrounds, which is probably why it places regularly in the top 100 in this country despite not being overly used these days by British families.

Rachel is quite classic. Rarely used these days, but still usable.

Pinkyhere · 09/08/2025 21:41

I love Rachel. For me it's lovely for a child and also for an adult.

LivingTheDreamish · 09/08/2025 22:10

I love Rachel - it is classic and a bit unusual these days for some reason. Lovely name.

Alexandrine · 09/08/2025 22:28

I’d probably pick Maria because it’s a bit more timeless (I think it’s only occasionally fallen out the Top 100) and is so well used internationally as a bonus.

Rachel is a pretty classic but it falls in and out of fashion more- plus there’s the Rachel vs Rachael thing (it may get misspelt).

But tbh you have picked 2 classic names which will stand your DD in good stead, so I can see why you are finding it hard to choose between them.

BootballJoy · 09/08/2025 23:01

I've never liked the name Rachel, but Maria is beautiful.

Bathingforest · 09/08/2025 23:03

Maria...

RogueFemale · 10/08/2025 00:18

Definitely Rachel. Maria sound very generic.

Stichintime · 10/08/2025 00:20

Think Maria is lovely!

BernardButlersBra · 10/08/2025 00:22

Both terrible and oh so dated. are there no other names you both like?

ILikeBigBurpsAndICannotLie · 10/08/2025 00:24

Rachel/Rachael lovely.

Always disliked Maria.

Cecilly · 10/08/2025 00:38

Maria is my favourite, but Rachel is also nice

Numbersaremything · 10/08/2025 09:19

Dated? Both are timeless biblical names. Honestly, if you look at the the tosh proposed on these threads!

I prefer Rachel, but Marie is my middle name.

Kumquatzest · 10/08/2025 09:56

I like both names, but I'd go for Maria because I know so many 1980s/90s-born Rachels.

Enough4me · 10/08/2025 10:01

Both equally lovely. Doesn't help!
Do heads and tales and imagine that name for a week to see if you feel happy or disappointed with the result. You probably have a slight bias towards one.

Mummyandboys · 10/08/2025 11:06

My little boy has a girl named Rachel in his class I’ve never come across another one and she’s such a sweet little girl! Equally we also know a little Maria ☺️ would Rachel Maria be an option? I think it flows lovely.
congratulations 🫶🏼

RuthW · 10/08/2025 13:42

Maria is lovely. I know a baby Maria. Rachel is a perfectly useable name but not to my taste.

Emanwenym · 10/08/2025 13:48

Both are nice. Rachel gets shortened to Rache, which I'm not keen on.

PermanentTemporary · 10/08/2025 13:51

Ds would have been Rachel if he’d been a girl. Not my top girls name but I like it and Dh adored it. I prefer Mary to Maria I have to say.

PInkyStarfish · 10/08/2025 17:06

I prefer Marie to Maria and I don’t like Rachel.

Moveoverdarlin · 10/08/2025 17:07

Either would be fine if it was 1975.
