Rhett vs Nash vs Atlas / Aubrey vs Ottilie

We think we are down to our contenders for our first baby due next month, we have kept the gender a surprise.

We both are huge country music fans and that's were some of the inspo on the boys names comes in - I know they won't be everyone's taste.

What are peoples honest opinions, I know the boys names especially aren't overly common in the UK but I think they are recognisable enough and easy to pronounce.

Boys

Rhett Oliver
Nash Jude
Atlas Terrence (Terrence is family name)

Girls

Aubrey Florence (nn Bre or Aub)
Ottilie Honey (nn Ottie or Otts)

Thanks :)

When in 1950?

No 2025
Drake - real name Aubrey Graham

greglet · 07/08/2025 12:20

@UnsocialMedia Ooh yes Dash(iell) is a fabulous name!

I don't mind Rhett. Makes a change from the tedious tidal wave of Alfies. How do you feel about Rex?

I prefer Nate to Nash, or Dash(iel) to Nash.

I love Jude, but Oliver feels like such a popular name it's a non-name to me. But nobody cares about middle names so it would be fine there. Same with Terrence.

Atlas isn't for me, it's just too associated with the character from mythology.

Florence, Aubrey and Ottilie are fine, can't get on board with Honey, I think it's infantilising somehow.

Dashiel, oh yes!

Westfacing · 07/08/2025 12:33

I'm just back from being out and about and lo and behold a removal van called Atlas went past!

There was a picture on the side of a strong man carrying a box on his shoulders instead of the heavens!

KingstonTown · 07/08/2025 12:34

Atlas is the name of the baby in Here We Go - he has dizzy/ditzy parents and it's a bit of a joke name through the series, just in case you aren't aware.

Rhett is pretty cool.
Nash(ville?) is just ridiculous.
Are you aware Atlas is a car made by VW in the US? I drove one when I lived there. As did my upstairs neighbours. And our best friends down the block. It’s a bit like calling your kid Tiguan.

I love Ottilie but round here nurseries are heaving with them. Aubrey I also really like. I’ve heard of the actress Aubrey Plaza as was a big Parks & Rec fan but never met one IRL.

I do follow a lot of American culture and I weirdly did know that VW made an Atlas lol. Glad you like Rhett, makes me feel like its not completely out of favour. Def leaning more towards Aubrey. Thanks for the comment.

Ottilie is very popular in the UK.

OldBeyondMyYears · 07/08/2025 12:57

Oliver Jude would be my pick of the boys…but I know you like the country style first names, so 🤷‍♀️

Florence is nice, as is Ottilie (but not with Honey, with the same ‘ee’ end sound!!) How about Ottilie Florence?

Many years ago a friend had a boyfriend from the Southern US called Beau, short for Beauregard. Is that a step too far?

It's similar to Rhett in style and ambience!

Snorlaxo · 07/08/2025 13:07

I think Ottilie will date badly as it’s part of the fashion for French names that started a few years ago- Amelie etc. Honey is an awful middle name imo.

Atlas is too big a name if your son is more introverted and shy. Rhett is much better imo (I think of Rhett and Link- not a bad association). Is Nash short for something like Nashville? It feels like an almost nickname and prefer something similar like Ash, Dash (as a pp suggested)

JamDisaster · 07/08/2025 13:07

Aubrey for a girl night get mixed up with Audrey a lot.

Judgejudysno1fan · 07/08/2025 13:16

Is it pronounced, Otta-lie
Or Otta-lee

Otta-lee.

Or Ottie for short 🥰

I like Atlas and Aubrey best. Was going to say the same as another poster, these days Aubrey is a gender neutral leaning girls name in the UK (267 girls vs 53 boys in 2023) so wouldn't stand out at all. Makes me think of Aubrey Plaza. And Atlas was #218 most popular for boys so again totally normal. I currently have a toddler so might be a generational thing, but these don't stand out as odd names to me even if not necessarily my personal picks. Rhett and Nash are still unusual, but there is a lot more variation in kids names these days.

What about Austin, Hank, Reid, Blake, Hudson, Sawyer, Carter for boys?

Remi, Hallie, Romilly or Cassidy for girls?

BootballJoy · 07/08/2025 15:26

I really like Atlas Terrence, I know two young Atlases, I don't think it's particularly 'out there' these days. I also know a young Memphis and a Zephyr!

I don't like Rhett because I really didn't like the character in gone with the wind and he's my only association. Melanie was my favourite character in that book but that's not quite the same naming vibe!

Nash is ok, but I love Dash shortened from Dashiell suggested above.

Aubrey was traditionally a boy's name in the UK but there are tons more girls these days. Your girls' names are a totally different vibe, very popular at the moment, lots of them around.

I'm not a fan of the Elodie/Amelie/Ottilie trend because I just think they sound a bit frumpy in an English accent- pretty names originally though. And there is no risk of Wretch/Gnash/Hottilie/Atilla etc, bit of a stretch and kids don't tease much these days over names because there's so much variety.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/08/2025 08:30

I like Ottilie but with Florence not Honey.

I think Rhett is the best of your boys names but i am not really keen on any of them. We had a big tattooed builder whose nickname was Nash. He was very nice but I'm not really seeing it for a baby. Jude or Oliver would both be nicer.

I agree all this.

Florence and Ottilie are both nice girl's names. Personally I'd go Florence Ottilie, but Ottilie Florence is fine

For the boy names, I'd go with Oliver Jude from that lot.

I think the worst combination is Nash Jude. It sounds so abrupt. Is Nash a first name? It sounds a bit like Gnash (as in gnash one's teeth) to me.

But I like Oliver, and Jude is fine.

Calliopespa · 07/08/2025 15:28

Aubrey can be a girl's name, I agree.

I much prefer the more classic Florence and Ottilie though.

Hank?

Westfacing · 07/08/2025 15:37

There would be no problem in the playground with any names these days - certainly not in London!

I know of an Atilla and a Genghis.

I rather like Memphis as mentioned upthread Smile

DuchessOfNarcissex · 07/08/2025 15:43

Rhett Oliver - Oliver's nice
Nash Jude - Gnasher
Atlas Terrence (Terrence is family name) - Terence is OK

Aubrey Florence (nn Bre or Aub) - Awful. Boy's name. Florence is OK.
Ottilie Honey (nn Ottie or Otts) - I don't like Ottilie, Ottie, Otts or Tilly. Honey is dreadful.

Calliopespa · 07/08/2025 15:43

I've been thinking on Atlas.

It's not a name I'd ever have considered personally, but, on reflection, I really don't see why not.

It's not "made-up yoonique" which I never think is fair on the child. It is easy to spell and pronounce and the associations are not bad at all.

If you like it, how about Atlas Oliver?

I think you need the Oliver in there somewhere as your others are all too monosyllabic and abrupt.

Calliopespa · 07/08/2025 15:45

ps. I don;t feel as though Terrence works with Atlas. I don't know why. It sounds like a street name - Atlas Terrace.

Maybe I've visited an Atlas Terrace at some point which is why I'm getting that vibe!

Or is it the repetition of the short "a" sound?

UnsocialMedia · 07/08/2025 15:47

I've been ruminating on Rhett and I'm coming round to it.

Can I also suggest Ford?

mnbvqwertyqwerty · 07/08/2025 16:35

I'd go for Rhett out of your 3 boys' names. I think of the dashing Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind, whereas Nash makes me think of gnashing of teeth and Atlas is a map.

I've always really disliked Ottilie (too close to "utterly") and I'd worry that people would assume Aubrey is a boy, although I'm aware it has become used for girls in recent years. I prefer Audrey, like Audrey Hepburn.

If your vibe in girls' names is ones ending in an "ee" sound and slightly out of the ordinary, you might like Xanthe, Penelope, Coralie or Sylvie.
