Hi everyone,
Currently 35 weeks pregnant with a girl, we already have a son but stuck on a name and feeling very stressed.

It needs to be something that is not too common but equally not so unusual that no one has ever heard of it before or a "made up name". Definitely asking for the only child in their class/year group with that name.

On our list so far are the following but I'm not sold on any, so similar names welcomed:

  • Eden
  • Romy/Romilly
  • Hallie
  • Noa
  • Juno
  • Nova
  • Kaia

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

That's not a shortening. Both have six letters and 2 syllables

The only one I like is Juno. The problem is that you have no idea if a name is suddenly going to become popular (I’m the mother of an adult Grace!). So just pick a name you love without thinking about whether it’s popular or not.

You can’t know what names other parents are choosing now. I’d go for the name you love best, never mind who else has it. Or a slightly unusual take on a common name. Janna? Sukie?

I really like your list. Especially Eden, Romilly and Hallie. Agree with others that you can't rely on being the only one in a school though. My nephew's name is 519th on the list for his year with only 75 babies being named his name. But there are still two of them in his room at nursery. Just one of those things.

Names that give me a similar vibe to your list and rank quite/very low on the UK statistics lists:
Aphra, Amberley, Averil, Aubrey, Asha, Arla, Bronte, Billie, Callie, Carys, Cherry, Camilla, Cassia, Cassidy, Clea, Dana, Danica, Everly, Ember, Etta, Effie, Erica, Enya, Fenella, Fabia, Giselle, Genesis, Hebe, Harmony, Inez, Iona, Juniper, Juliet, Jemima, Jessamy, Kiki, Karensa, Katinka, Keziah, Kendra, Kenzie, Kirsten, Lorelai, Livia, Liara, Lian, Mika, Mala, Miranda, Meredith, Mirren, Nyah, Nia, Neriah, Nerilly, Ondine, Ocean, Piper, Pandora, Pippi, Quinn, Remy, Rivkah, Rhiann, Rowena, Rosina, Rosita, Skye, Samaris, Saffron, Sorrel, Star, Tamara, Tegan, Taryn, Tansy, Vita, Verity, Vashti, Winter, Xanthe, Zeryn, Zia.

My daughters name is Danielle. Might not be what you’re looking for, but I just love the name and always recommend it.

I like Eden. Romilly is sweet but I dislike Romy as a stand alone name. Hallie is ok. The rest aren't for me (I particularly dislike Nova, which is very trendy right now and will date terribly).

I'd try to push all notions of trying to find a name which will be the only one in her year group out of your head and just aim to find something you like as you can never guarantee these things.

Statistically, even Olivia could easily be the only one in her year group these days as there are far more schools in England and Wales than there are children given the number 1 name each year now. It's not like when we were at school at all, as so many people strive to be different these days. However, some names will inevitably be duplicated in some schools (the popularity of certain names is often condensed to particular areas, so there will be very few in a certain part of the country and loads elsewhere). There is absolutely no way of knowing what those duplicated names will be. Sometimes they are top 20 names, other times they are completely random.

Those who go out of their way to try and find something they think will be uncommon are usually most put out when that happens. At least with a statistically popular name, you're realistic that it may be duplicated and can be pleasantly surprised if it isn't (which more often than not is the case these days). Obviously if the name you truly love is unusual go for it, but don't do so just because you think it won't be duplicated at school. Equally don't rule out something you absolutely love just because it's popular, as chances are it probably won't be duplicated anyway. If it is, it really isn't the end of the world.

Vita would be perfect. It has the vibe of your shortlist but distills it beautifully.
