Would the name Miles be weird?

So I love the name Miles but my surname is South - would it sound too ‘directional’ or am I overthinking it?

Agree with pp that Milo South works!

Fairygoblin · 01/08/2025 23:07

Can you do a double barrel with the dad? With dad’s surname in middle to break it up?!

Enko · 01/08/2025 23:08

I dont mind it.
Niles if you dont like Miles South.

LucasBuck · 02/08/2025 00:54

Well it’s certainly memorable! 😀 Milo or Giles would be less amusing though.

Isitreallysohard · 02/08/2025 00:56

No! But also I feel that's a name for a butler or a very camp man

MorphandMindy · 02/08/2025 00:57

I came on here to say “No not at all” and saw the surname is “South”, and I’ve immediately u-turned so hard you can probably hear tyres screech.

yoursweetpotatoesarebland · 02/08/2025 01:01

Absolutely not.

pick something else!

CrystalSingerFan · 02/08/2025 01:35

Don't do it.

Just watch all the best episodes of Frasier where Miles is (very) slowly getting together with Daphne.

Brendahollowayreconsider · 02/08/2025 01:38

Northn.. south.👍
.

Magicwand80 · 02/08/2025 02:17

Myles south has a nice ring to it.

DoAWheelie · 02/08/2025 02:42

I find single syllable names need a longer one paired with them to not sound strange really. So it would be a bit clipped even if it didn't have the directional theme.

Giles or Niles maybe? With a longer middle name to balance it a bit.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 02/08/2025 06:38

He’d just be plagued by jokes all his life like “how many miles south of Newcastle is Durham “?

flapjackfairy · 02/08/2025 06:43

I once heard of someone called Miles Stones ! it was a customer at a place of work !
What we're the parents thinking !

Chelsea26 · 02/08/2025 06:46

I would immediately nickname him Antartica so if you like that - go for it!

No.

it will be fine. Most people are not giving out their surnames that often.

Ditto.

Miles is a lovely name. South is a very elegant surname. The two together don't work sadly.

grotesquelygrotesque · 02/08/2025 07:25

Miles never Smiles. Miles South - Nope. 👎

Milo is a suitable name for a puppy. It’s a common name for dogs. Cute name for a child but not for an adult.

Really? In my world I would say it’s the opposite, especially in a professional environment. Email, slack, mobile (when it’s added as a phone contact it flashes up) - seeing first and surname together is much harder to get away from than ever before!

Not to mention class lists and registers and school. I hated my surname in school - it was double-barreled at a time when nobody else’s was and consequently was seen as incredibly pretentious - and no matter how much I tried to get away from it, it was tough even then. It’s harder now that kids have to wear lanyards with their name printed on it, all day long.

That’s Niles Crane not Miles.

Thanks - I know. I tried twice to delete it after a braincell fired and clearly failed. Perhaps the OP might like it as a suggestion anyway - the character's great.
