Stuck between two names

Expecting a little girl in the autumn and we're stuck between two names! We go for more unusual names, so I know they won't be to everyone's taste and I don't particularly care if people don't like them or wouldn't choose them for their own children.

I'm interested to hear thoughts on the names, potential for nicknames etc. Surname begins with M. Middle names are chosen based on family names, beginning with E and J, but not sure on the order yet.

So: Persephone or Octavia?

Octavia.

Melsy88 · 29/07/2025 13:56

Persephone

FrogFrogFrog · 29/07/2025 13:57

Persephone could have the nickname Seph or Sephie, which is nice. Octavia could have Tavy.

They're both beautiful names, but I prefer Octavia. The 'Queen of the Underworld' association would probably put me off Persephone!

Empress13 · 29/07/2025 13:57

How is Persephone pronounced ?

Duckyfondant · 29/07/2025 13:58

Persephone is a beautiful name. Octavia, less so

LoudPlumDog · 29/07/2025 13:59

Octavia

How is Persephone pronounced ?

per seff an ee

(Thats how I would say it)

I prefer Persephone

goudacheese · 29/07/2025 14:00

Sephy or Ava are nice, prefer Sephy.

miniaturepixieonacid · 29/07/2025 14:00

Ooh, tough.

I prefer Octavia to Perspehone

But I prefer Sephy to Tavvy (which seem to be the inevitable shortenings).

I think I'd go with Octavia. Both lovely though.

LikeABat · 29/07/2025 14:02

Just wait until the baby is born. You may find that one of the names feels a better fit.

Rosesonroses · 29/07/2025 14:02

Persephone. Sephy is really cute and I love Percy as a nn too.

I know an Octavia who goes by Vivi, very cute nn. My preference is Persephone but they’re both very pretty names.

squishousdelicious · 29/07/2025 14:05

@Empress13 per-seff-oh-knee would be the pronunciation.

@FrogFrogFrog I quite like the Queen of the Underworld element - has attitude! Plus, the whole story is better than just marrying Hades, she does at least come back to the surface and bring Spring/Summer with her!

@LikeABat it may well come to this, I know. Would quite like it not to though!

Any pitfalls anyone can see with initials etc?

I assume you have checked the the initials in each case don't spell something odd?

I prefer Octavia.
I always read Persephone as Percy-phone and think there would be more spelling errors.

Bluetoothpaste · 29/07/2025 14:06

Octavia

Squishymallows · 29/07/2025 14:07

Love them both so much but would go for Octavia

Well, it would be PM (PEJM or PJEM) or OM (OEJM or OJEM). I can't think of any problems personally, but on other threads I've read, there's often someone who finds a perspective I haven't thought of!

Octavia always reminds me of Pipkins!

Persephone is too like telephone. Octavia for me.

PrincessOfPreschool · 29/07/2025 14:13

I think Seffie is a good NN. Octavia makes me think it must be to do with the number 8 (octagon, octopus) and has some potential for bullying NNs.

PrincessOfPreschool · 29/07/2025 14:14

Is it for the 8th child in a family?!

RuthChrisSt · 29/07/2025 14:16

Persephone! Love this name, it's the name of my cat!

TheIceBear · 29/07/2025 14:18

I really like the name Persephone . Not wild on Octavia

thornbury · 29/07/2025 14:18

Both pretentious, prefer Octavia.
