Emily Rose or Lily Catherine?

I like both Emily and Lily as first anmes but struggling to decide. I think Catherine as middle name to a short soft name like Lily gives it a lot of stronger classic vibe and it’s the name of my dhs grandma who just recently passed away.

I love Emily too although I know it’s way past its peak and think rose is prettier with it than Catherine.

thoughts?

Immediately thought of The Exorcism of Emily Rose and then A Rose for Emily, which, while a fantastic story, is very much about murder and worse. I wouldn’t put those names together I’m afraid!

Don’t choose emily rose, that’s a combo that was very trendy and common in 90s/2000s. It sounds dated to me now.

Lily Catherine is beautiful, Lily is popular but it’s a classic and Catherine gives it a bit more character and depth than just being another Rose Grace, Mae etc.

Lily Catherine.
It’s a lovely combo with family connection. What could be better?

I agree. Even though Emily and rose on their own are very classic the combo is extremely dated to a specific era (early 2000s)

Emily Catherine would be a lot less common and dated.

Emanwenym · 27/07/2025 16:47

Of the two, Lily Catherine, but that's because Rose as a middle name is so meh.
Emily Catherine is nicer. There are probably thousands of Emily Roses and Lily Roses.

^ sorry I mean Catherine would be less dated.

Lily Catherine is a lovely combination. Personally I prefer middle names to have meaning.

I prefer Emma to Emily. Emily Rose is not a great combination, due to reasons already explained by other posters. I'm not into horror films but it was huge when I was at secondary school so, when I hear that combination, my mind automatically jumps to that film despite having never seen it myself.

Hotandbotheredflower · 27/07/2025 16:56

I like Emily Catherine, rose as a middle name is so over done imo it’s the Louise of the 90s

IMissSparkling · 27/07/2025 16:59

Another vote for Emily Catherine.
As Catherine is a family name, surely you either use it or you don't, rather than worrying about what combination sounds best?

SweetFancyMoses · 27/07/2025 17:02

The middle name stops mattering the minute you decide upon it. It has absolutely no importance nor bearing in life. Yes, anything ‘Rose’ sounds terribly twee, but if you like it, use it.

softlyfallsthesnow · 27/07/2025 17:07

Definitely Emily Catherine. Middle names are hardly ever said together with first names. Emily and Catherine are both classy names.

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/07/2025 17:22

Lily Catherine! Lovely name 😊

Allswellthatendswelll · 27/07/2025 17:34

Definitely Catherine not Rose. Rose is very overdone as a middle name and I think it's nice to have family names for middle names (both my DC have them). Either Emily Catherine or Lily Catherine or maybe even Catherine as a first name as it's very classic.

Clearinguptheclutter · 27/07/2025 17:36

There must be so many Emily Roses. And Lily Roses.

much prefer Lily Catherine
Emily Catherine also nice

LucasBuck · 27/07/2025 17:46

Lily Catherine is stunning as a whole name, very similar to a lovely Lily Josephine I know. I also love that Catherine is a family name for you. Emily Rose is blah in comparison- there must be thousands in the world as it’s such a commonplace combination.

BUT that doesn’t really matter as they aren’t going to be known by their full names day to day- so which do you really like better, Lily or Emily? I personally prefer the softer sound of Lily but Emily is a nice classic.

(I must admit I think your middle names choices are even nicer though - both Rose and Catherine are so classic sounding and either would be a great first name that would stand out more than Lily or Emily these days. I do know a couple of youngish Rose’s but it’s rare to meet a Catherine under 30).

DemonsandMosquitoes · 27/07/2025 18:40

Catherine is by far the nicest name. Catherine..something else.

7catsisnotenough · 27/07/2025 19:18

Lily Catherine is lovely, how about Lily Kate/ Cate?

Limonades · 27/07/2025 19:51

I know two Emily Roses!

Hope your surname is unusual!!

Norastroud · 27/07/2025 20:21

Lily Catherine is a gorgeous name! I do also really like Catherine shortened to Kitty or Kate x

out of curiosity how old are they? Emily rose does feel slightly less timeless as a combination and I’m curious if most Emily roses are of a similar age. Although I think it’s pretty I’d hate to give my dd a name that could be pinpointed to a specific time.

Or just to throw another option into the mix, I prefer Catherine Rose

CoolMorningDew · 27/07/2025 22:05

Emily Rose 👍

BootballJoy · 27/07/2025 22:32

Lily Catherine (or Emily Catherine if you prefer Emily).

JillyGiraffe · 27/07/2025 22:33

Lilly Catherine or Emily Catherine. I know an Emily Rose who is mid 30’s.
