Thoughts on our list 2025

We like more sturdy, traditional names and are completely aware that most on our list will be perceived as “dated.” But we’d much rather give our child a slightly dusty sounding name and one that they can carry through all stages of their life. We aren’t looking for people to try and convince us against any of the names, nor why people don’t like them, but we’d welcome your thoughts and a general consensus on which you like the best. Basically we’re just testing the waters with them on a somewhat neutral ground. No negativity please!

For girls, we're leaning towards Laura at the moment. For boys, Michael.

Anne
Harriet
Joanna
Judith
Laura
Léa
Lydia
Maud
Olive
Rachel
Victoria

Christopher
Jamie
John
Joseph
Matthew
Michael
Paul
Robert

Others we like for reference but aren’t necessarily on the front runners list. Feel free to change my mind:
Ada, Daisy, Diana, Felicity, Julia, Molly
Benjamin, Daniel, Luke, Peter, Theo

Laura and Michael are great. I prefer Lauren though.

Love, love, love every single one of your suggestions for a boy! Shame your DH doesn't like David, as it's a good solid name. How about Joel, Andrew, Solomon?

From your girls' list, I also like Lydia, Joanna, Victoria, Julia and Felicity. How about Cléo, Indie, Anna, Michelle, Estelle, Amélie, Camille, or Gabrielle? Many of these have French connections and are beautiful.

My favourites from your list are Harriet, Victoria, Joseph and Matthew

I think Julia is due a come back. Lovely name. John ditto. Not keen on Michael or Laura.

I have classical taste in names but find these utterly dull if not dusty, that they are so common place means you are almost guaranteed to think of someone else.

Having said that Joseph, Michael, Harriet and Leah would be my picks out of them

I really love Maud, but probably would choose Felicity as first name, which I also love.
I think your boys names are too stiff and boring, I would recommend Adrian, Lewis/Louis, Francis, Leon/Leo, Arthur, Gaspar/Jasper, Nolan, George, Dylan, Jack, Bruno, Oscar, Jeremy, Cedric, Elias.... but my personal likes on baby names are more adventurous.

blueskydays45 · 27/07/2025 16:24

I agree with your point about some of them being dated however from your list, Harriet and Matthew are nice names that are still being used regularly so seems more current

Radioundermypillow · 27/07/2025 16:25

Laura is lovely and much nicer than Lara imo.

MostlyGhostly · 27/07/2025 16:34

I love these similar names best from your list: Joanna for a girl, Joseph for a boy, Jo/ Joe nns. These could be children/ adults from any social class and area of UK, work well across nationalities, and could be from any era. Joanna is not as 70s/80s as Joanne and some of the others on your list like Rachel and Laura

midlifeattheoasis · 27/07/2025 17:52

Not really liking any of the girls name. What about Annie? I do like Theo though.

VayCay · 27/07/2025 18:13

Judith and Maud are atrocious. The rest are fairly inoffensive.

Poodley · 28/07/2025 01:15

Laura was on our list and I still think it would have suited DD ❤️

For boys I really like Peter, Benjamin and also Samuel. DH liked Robert and I was unconvinced at the time but now we know a little Robbie and I think it's great.
