Joey as nickname for Joel

We named our 16 month old son Joel as liked the name and really wanted a name which is familiar but not too common. Over the padt 6 months or so I feel the name does not suit him much and realised I don't like it nearly as much as our oldest son's name and cant seem to shift the feeling. I think I've found the fact it's one syllable quite difficult and wish we'd gone for a longer name. We previously called him Joely and my oldest son also calls him Joey, which we have also started doing. Family were suprised by this as hadnt heard of this as a typical nickname from Joel. Would you consider Joey a nickname from the name Joel abnormal? We did always like the name Joey but felt it was too much of a nickname to use as a first name! Or are there any other nicknames for Joel which you've heard which may work? 🙂

I have a Joel and when he was little we called him Joely, wouldnt have called him Joey as to me thats short for Joseph. Hes an adult now and loves being a Joel!

I’m sorry you feel like this. I felt similar with my second but I’ve grown to love his name now and can’t imagine him being called anything else

In all honesty, no, it’s not a nickname and to me, is a completely different name. Joey for Joseph works? He’s still young and if you both feel that strongly you could change it to Joseph/Joey.

I have friends who did this after 3 months. Completely different name. At the time I thought it was strange but she’s 10 now and I can’t even remember what her original name was!

Ahh that's lovely! Yes I think I may just be struggling with it as it is quite a mature sounding name but Joely is cute too!

Ahh thank you for your lovely message.

Yes I think you're right, I wonder if it's just he needs to grow into it and when he's able to say his own name imagine that'll help too! Wouldn't change his name at this point as feel he is too old 🙂

If you hadn’t guessed my second is called Miles. I had the same issue in that it sounded too old/mature. But he is Milesy, Smiley Miley, Milesy Moo… he’s only 3 and no one calls him Miles. Everyone uses one of the above. But when he’s older I think he’ll appreciate having something more mature to use! Although he’ll always be my smiley miley!

I think it's absolutely fine to call him Joey. Besides, Joel is really the Hebrew name "yo-EL".

I know people with all sorts of unrelated nicknames, just completely different names as nicknames. At least Joey and Joel have a clear connection.

You can use anything at all as a nickname for anything. Both of mine have nicknames that bear no relationship to their actual names!

The Joel I know was Joey as a child and sometimes still is although he is now a middle aged man!

Joel nn Joey is lovely!! I love both Joel and Joey. Joel is a great name for when he’s older as it’s not shortened and unusual but familiar. Joey is cute for now - best of both worlds 😊

Absolutely fine and a lovely nickname for Joel.

Vodkamartini3olives · 23/07/2025 17:45

Joel is a lovely name but I'm not keen on Joey. Joe or Jojo are the best nicknames ever (I'm biased I have a Joe)

paddypipedown · 25/07/2025 19:06

I've got a Joel, and we call him Joel, Joely and Jojo. As it's only one syllable, any nickname versions are actually lengthened !

I think Joey works - go for it !

I could have written this post! My second is Joel and he’s 9 months old. I have the exact same worries about his name! I often think about changing it. But when I look at him I only see Joel! I hope I eventually learn to love it. We use Joely as a nick name. I think Joey would work too!
