Thoughts on Miranda? It was our top name (probably still is). We like that it is recognisable without being overused. We don't mind that it is slightly dated because we like those sorts of names. We don't want a name that is going to scream "I was born in the 2020s" in 10-20 years so would prefer a name that has already dated and gone out of fashion. Unfortunately, every family member that we have casually mentioned it to (as a possibility) has hated it.

We also like:

Bethany
Connie
Francesca
Kate
Lynn
Matilda (like the name itself but don't love how trendy/overused it is)
Meredith
Rebecca
Rhea (ray-ah)
Stephanie

I like Miranda, but like Matilda better
Also like Stephanie, Bethany and Rebecca.

Qoopwhooping · 17/07/2025 18:41

I like Miranda. Every girl child around here is called Matilda.

I love Rebecca but I can stand Becky. Meredith is lovely.

softlyfallsthesnow · 17/07/2025 18:41

Miranda is a lovely name. You made a bit of a mistake telling your family as they're obviously not very tactful. Your baby and your choice.
Matilda, Rebecca and Kate from your list but I'd stick with Miranda.

whynotmereally · 17/07/2025 19:06

Not keen on Miranda just reminds me of Miranda hart. Love Matilda, Francesca, Bethany and Connie. Don’t like Meredith just reminds me of greys anatomy

RantzNotBantz · 17/07/2025 19:14

I have never heard Rhea pronounced Ray-a
Always Ree-ah

ninjahamster · 17/07/2025 19:30

I quite like it but don’t like Randy as a nickname. That would worry me.
Love Matilda, I have one but she’s in her 20s now and it was less popular then.
How about Melissa? I really love it as a name, Lissy as a nn.

LucasBuck · 17/07/2025 19:32

Miranda is by far the nicest of your name choices imo - elegant and underused, it makes me think of the Tempest character first, as well as a couple of Actresses and Models. I’m always surprised it’s not more popular as it has some nice nn options too in Mira, Mirry and Andie (and even Panda if you are UC/public school).

Most of your other choices I either find a bit dated sounding now (Lynn, Rebecca because of Becky, Bethany) or alternatively quite trendy (Matilda, Connie, Rhea/Raya) or just a bit blah (Francesca because of Frankie, Meredith), sorry.

I do have a secret soft spot for Stephanie, even though technically it’s quite 60’s/70’s (but it’s so pretty and Stevie Nicks makes it cool) and Kate is always a can’t-go-wrong classic, especially if you give her the option of C/Katherine on the BC.

PanderBare · 17/07/2025 19:33

Miranda is Shakespearean and never been wildly popular so shouldn't date. Connie, Francesca, Kate are nice.
Matilda -very popular
Rebecca- was vey popular in the 1990s
Stephanie, Bethany and Lynn are dated.
Rhea and Meredith are names that I find unappealing.

hideawayforever · 17/07/2025 19:33

Love Kate, think its timeless.

JaneEyre40 · 17/07/2025 19:40

Your family are dicks, I can't believe they would say they hated it, how rude!

user2848502016 · 17/07/2025 19:42

I love Miranda, it’s a timeless classic.

It’s nicer than all the others on your list, although I do like Rebecca

Cocktailsandcheese · 17/07/2025 20:21

It's ok. Much prefer some of your other options though - Bethany, Stephanie, Francesca, Kate and Rebecca are all really lovely

bettydavieseyes · 17/07/2025 20:25

I love it! You could use Miri as a nickname which would be really cute. I don't like any of your other names! Miranda stands out and the rest don't.

JaneAustensCatDotty · 17/07/2025 20:27

I think it’s quite nice but Francesca has gravitas and style.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 17/07/2025 20:28

Miranda is great - it’ll probably come round again in 20 years so she’ll be ahead of the pack and delighted about it.

Quite like a couple below - especially Meredith - but it’s by far the best, being recognisable but not overused

Bethany - it’s a bit lumpen

Connie - I like it, best short for Constance

Francesca - great but getting popular - think it’s the next Matilda

Kate - love this too. Ideally as a shortform

Lynn - I think this needs more time to loose it’s 80s barmaid connotations. It’s not very distinguished full stop. Maybe Aislinn or Rosalyn?

Matilda (like the name itself but don't love how trendy/overused it is) - it’s way way way overdone

Meredith - I like it, it’s definitely rising in popularity. Marianne is nice too.

Rebecca - lovely but only the full form - and it always seems to get shortened

Rhea (ray-ah) - horrible. Also half the time people will say Ree-uh

Stephanie - it’s ok - but I do love the nn Stevie

Agree with all of this.

Lemonem · 17/07/2025 20:31

Do you mean Raya

boringingoring · 17/07/2025 20:31

If you go for Kate or Connie, definitely give her the full version of the name so she has the option.

I think Miranda is lovely.

Christwosheds · 17/07/2025 20:31

Although Connie only as a nn for Constance.

WhimsyWhim · 17/07/2025 20:32

RantzNotBantz · 17/07/2025 19:14

I have never heard Rhea pronounced Ray-a
Always Ree-ah

Ray-ah is closer to the original Greek pronunciation. Ree-ah is the usual pronunciation in the UK.

Bea372 · 17/07/2025 20:45

I don't like Miranda, it's quite hard sounding to me. I love Rebecca, classic but you don't hear it much any more. Bethany is also pretty IMO.

Mandarinaduck · 17/07/2025 21:05

Miranda is lovely

I also mostly like your other choices too. Bethany is lovely, it sounds very gentle yet not frilly or drippy.

Other ideas which come to mind based on your choices
Vanessa
Mirabel
Livia
Caroline
Sarah
Alethea
Electra
Sigrid

Inthesmallclouds · 17/07/2025 21:13

Sorry but Miranda is such an ugly name

WhimsyWhim · 17/07/2025 21:15

I really like Lynn. You don't hear it much as a first name now. I love Francesca but don't like Frankie. Bethany is pretty too.

I really dislike Connie (and Constance). It reminds me of a creepy stalker woman that sniffs people's hair. I have no idea where that association came from as I've never met a Connie. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Op1n1onsPlease · 17/07/2025 21:15

I love Miranda. Also Stephanie and as pp suggested Caroline - feels strong, feminine, sophisticated to me.
