Rita just makes me think of Bluey, so until the next big thing in kids tv comes along I think it will be associated with “Grannies”.

Or lovely Rita meter maid.

They will all sound brilliant as adults think you are naming an adult. Of my mum’s friends was Renee (Irene) although an old name in our terms she was fabulous woman. Think of the future adult owning the name

Renée is a great name. My friend’s 13 yo suits it very well

Vivienne will become Vi at school

Or Viv. That's what everyone called my great aunt Vivienne,; Viv.

ScrummyDiva2 · 12/07/2025 19:55

Veda is a very popular brand of malted bread in N.Ireland- I wouldn’t use it!

Momstermash94 · 12/07/2025 19:59

Out of the names you mentioned, definitely Vivienne. Vivienne Blanchard just totally sounds like the name of a successful, memorable person, it gives me author vibes

soontobeamama · 12/07/2025 20:52

Vivienne is beautiful, not as keen on the rest - Rita and Maud have a very different vibe. Veda is a bit more unusual / quirky, but I wouldn’t call it old fashioned.

Headingforholidays · 12/07/2025 21:07

I know a Vienne which I much prefer to Vivienne.
I am not keen on Maud or Rita.

summertimeinLondon · 12/07/2025 21:15

Vivienne and Maud are quite chic at the moment — Maudie is cute for a little girl. I personally am not keen on Vivienne (or the shortening Viv), but it’s definitely currently in. I’m not so keen on Veda, as it seems more in the hippie-crunchy style, very different to Maud and Vivienne.

I really don’t like Rita, I’m afraid. Where I grew up in the north it’s not just an old-fashioned name, but very working class (not that that’s a problem in itself, but where Vivienne and Maud give 1930s society novel vibes, Rita is definitely conjuring up a 1960s charlady in a quilted housecoat with a nylon turban and a cigarette stuck to her hand — sorry!)

My favourite is definitely Maud/Maudie.

chillibuns · 12/07/2025 21:32

Maud is awful. Sorry.

summertimeinLondon · 12/07/2025 21:43

OP what about the following:

Vita
Constance
Marigold
Christabel
Hera
Belinda
Hebe?

freshpyjamas · 12/07/2025 21:46

Maud is absolutely awful. Little baby Maud….no.

Apollonia1 · 12/07/2025 21:54

Vivienne is fine (but does make me think of Pretty Woman)
Maud to me is a very drab, ugly name - like daub.
Rita needs a few years before it comes back.
Veda - a bit niche, but I’ve only heard of this name on one of the grannies in the TV show “Shahs of Sunset”, so I presumed it was a Persian name.

LucasBuck · 12/07/2025 22:18

Veda has never been popular enough to be old-fashioned. Lovely that it’s a family name. It’s fairly uncommon but its style - V and vowel heavy, and 2 syllable (see Ava, Eva, Evie, Ivy, Ada etc) means she will still fit right in with her peers.

Rita is a dated nickname for Margarita that has yet to come back into fashion. Tbh imo it would be kinder to call her the full Margarita and let her choose the nickname. For a certain generation Rita is still “Rita, Sue and Bob too”.

Vivienne is quite trendy ever since Angelina Jolie used it for one of her kids - it’s more “French chic” like Isabelle, Amelie, Elodie etc rather than old-fashioned now. Vivian/Vivien (the English spellings) might be considered more retro.

Maud is now seen more as hipster cool rather than old-fashioned by younger folk imo. But unless you live somewhere like London, you’d likely still be one of the very early adopters as it’s definitely not Nancy or Mabel mainstream yet.

Personally I’d go for Veda.

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 12/07/2025 22:22

Love them all and would be refreshing to meet a baby with any of these names. Rita makes me think of Dexter's girlfriend. She was very beautiful and sweet, I don't think its a bad connotation.

Vivienne Blanchard sounds like a model. That's a name that's going places.

roshi42 · 12/07/2025 22:28

Veda the Vet is one of the more annoying CBeebies programmes on at the moment and you will have the theme tune stuck in your head forever. This may or may not be an issue to you! But I think the name will be well known to the current generation of toddlers. I’m not sure if it will make it more popular. I haven’t heard it on a baby / child in real life yet.

(Any previous posters unsure of pronunciation, just watch that - and apologies when you have it in your head for the next week!)

Editing to say, I don’t think any of your choices are too old fashioned - that’s the trend with names. I think Vivienne sounds best with your wonderful last name. Maud also sounds good.

OVienna · 12/07/2025 22:47

I love Maud.

ZiggyZowie · 12/07/2025 22:49

Vivienne or Vivian is the only good one

ColinCaterpillarsNo1Fan · 12/07/2025 22:54

My faves are as follows:

  1. Vivienne
  2. Veda
  3. Rita
  4. Maude

I'll suggest a few that go with your surname:
Adeline Blanchard
Cora Blanchard
Pearl Blanchard
Margot Blanchard
Violet Blanchard

WildCherryBlossom · 12/07/2025 22:56

Vivienne is my favourite from your list. I also think it works very well with your surname.

Quite surprised to find myself liking Maud with your surname too. It’s not the sort of name I usually go for but I do like those names together.

Thulpelly · 12/07/2025 22:57

Veda is my favourite, unusual but lovely. It being your grandmother’s name is a plus.

Vivienne is a great classic name. I like the Vivien spelling too.

I don’t love Maud because it feels gloomy, I automatically think ‘maudlin’.

Rita is cool, Marguerite is a nice long form for this if you wanted one. It means daisy/pearl.

tsmainsqueeze · 12/07/2025 23:09

Rita- old barmaid/prostitute ,
other names lovely especially with your surname.

mathanxiety · 12/07/2025 23:34

Thatslife234 · 12/07/2025 18:10

I dont like any of them. They don't sound like toddler names very old fashioned.

The child won't be a toddler forever (thankfully).

Old fashioned names are very popular these days.

Enko · 12/07/2025 23:48

Rita reminds of of my late utterly beautiful inside and out aunt. So to me Ritas are just that..

Im not keen on Veda but love Maud and Vivvienne
