Not really keen on any, but Maude (with an e) is the best of the bunch.

Vivienne will become Viv, which is awful.

Rita is a character out of a 1970s comedy sketch, along with her friend Carol, having a gossip over the garden fence in her pinny and rollers, with a fag hanging out the corner of her mouth.

Veda…never heard of it but sounds like an old Ford - The Ford Veda.

MissBattleaxe · 12/07/2025 13:22

Vivienne is beautiful. I also like the suggestion from a PP above - Marguerite. It means Daisy but can be shortened lots of ways , Margo is pretty.

OldRoguey · 12/07/2025 13:31

I like and Veda and Vivienne. Not Rita so much and Maud is terrible, even for an elderly person, nevermind a kid.

aWeeCornishPastie · 12/07/2025 13:32

Maud and Rita definite no nos

MissSmiley · 12/07/2025 13:33

I know a Vivienne (vivi) and a Veda all secondary school age. Not keen on Maude.

My grandmother was Veda, born about 1905. A great aunt of the same vintage on the other side of the family was also Veda. I like it but DH wasn’t keen so we didn’t use it.
They’re all good names that go well with your surname.

ginasevern · 12/07/2025 13:44

I've never heard of the name Veda. Maybe your grandma was supposed to be called Velda (which was reasonably popular years ago) and the registrar made a mistake. For my generation, Rita conjures up a woman in a faux leopard skin coat, peroxide hair and with a fag hanging out of her mouth. Vivienne is lovely but will inevitably be shortened to Viv. I'd go with Maud personally.

All fabulous.
Way nicer than the awful 'ie' names currently filling up our classrooms.

Rita
Veda
Maud
Vivienne

Surname is Blanchard.

I love Maud the best... but like neither with surname. They all sound old western with surname like Blanchard.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/07/2025 14:12

Im of an exact generation where they dont sound nice at all.

TheGriffle · 12/07/2025 14:15

I had Vada on my list for both DD’s (assume same pronunciation as Veda) have none of you seen My Girl?! Dh wouldn’t let me use it as he’s a Star Wars fan and thought people would think we’d named her after Darth Vader.

I also liked Juliet, Juno, Mabel, Tessa and Josephine.

Mydadsbirthday · 12/07/2025 14:34

I don't like of them and really dislike Maud. It looks so ugly. Sorry

BunnyLake · 12/07/2025 15:39

I like them all! We have a Vivienne - she’s called vivi at home and school. Zero regrets - we love her name!

It’s lovely. It makes me think of the gorgeous Vivienne Leigh. Vivi is a really cute nn.

Pippatpip · 12/07/2025 16:11

Vivienne Blanchard sounds like an incredibly glamorous 1930s movie starlet or someone who married most terribly terribly well and became the ‘it’ girl of their generation. Rita - nope. Maude is nice and people won’t nowadays keep asking her to come into the garden, Maude.

Moreteaandchocolate · 12/07/2025 16:17

Vivienne is lovely.

Maud and Rita are frumpy and dated.

Veda I haven’t heard of - I thought of Darth Veda!

Vivienne Blanchard sounds like she would be a beautiful character in a Tennessee Williams play.

That was my first thought too. I think it's was because of Vivienne Leigh playing Blanche Dubois in a Streetcar named Desire (had to watch this bloody film dozens of times at school when doing it for A level)

mathanxiety · 12/07/2025 17:37

All of those (lovely) names are popular right now.

I know two Vidas and two Vitas. It's perhaps not a mistake, though the E spelling is unusual.

AngelaBB · 12/07/2025 17:40

They’re great names, don’t worry what others think.

jill5676 · 12/07/2025 17:42

Interesting that there's quite a few saying Rita is old fashioned, there are several Rita's at DD (3) nursery and toddler groups so it's making a comeback! I really like it personally, quite like Vivienne too, but can't stand Maud I'm afraid.

OurStepsWillAlwaysRhyme · 12/07/2025 17:52

Maud is such an incredibly ugly sound and name. I can't fathom why anyone would want to saddle their child with it. Vivienne is as least quite pretty. The others are quite dull and dated.

CaveMum · 12/07/2025 17:55

Rita just makes me think of Bluey, so until the next big thing in kids tv comes along I think it will be associated with “Grannies”.

Inthesmallclouds · 12/07/2025 17:56

I think they’re all very ugly names
MN seem to love ugly, old fashioned names

Thatslife234 · 12/07/2025 18:10

I dont like any of them. They don't sound like toddler names very old fashioned.
