mybrainaches · 26/05/2008 12:35

I think its a nice name for a dog.........sorry

LaDiDaDi · 26/05/2008 12:35

I like it. Can't think of any shortenings which may or may not be a plus for your friend.

Collision · 26/05/2008 12:42

not really....bit posh and sounds a bit smarmy.....

cadelaide · 26/05/2008 12:44

love it

ILiketoMarmiteMarmite · 26/05/2008 14:34

I know a Jasper who pronounces it Jar - sper and gets a lot of sniggers about it. It's such a caricature name at this stage that I think using it seems sort of aspirational.

I do like it shortened to Jaz, though, which another Jasper I know does.

I don't dislike it. I actually like it but I'd never, ever use it as it's too self-conscious. Jasper is the predictable 'new Oscar' and Victor is the bolder outside the box new Oscar. If you follow this train of thought!

I forgot all about Jasper Carrot 'til I saw the pp, I don't think of him at all. I get confused with Jester actually. I think 'Court Jasper' which makes no sense at all.

I prefer Casper, it has a different feel. Is Jasper a semi-precious stone!

I would hate to have a semi-precious son

But after all that analysis, it's still an ok name.

emiliadaniel · 26/05/2008 15:51

My first reaction was large, wet Golden Retriever (but I am a vet!)

VictorianSqualor · 26/05/2008 15:54

Nope, use Rufus.

3andnomore · 26/05/2008 15:57

Jasper, to me, a this name of an exeptional stupid dalmation pup

Aero · 26/05/2008 16:13

I never liked it (think Jasper Carrot) before, but it's grown on me since knowing a little Jasper at ds2's pre-school. Suits him down to the ground and the family is not in the least bit posh.

Pinkchampagne · 26/05/2008 16:15

I don't mind it.

snice · 26/05/2008 16:18

It's a spaniel's name

Sidge · 26/05/2008 16:18

My cat was called Jasper.

instantly thought of jasper carrot - and he's a tw*t

marialuisa · 26/05/2008 17:27

I know an adult Jasper-he hates it. He reacted against his name at school by getting into as many fights as possible.

cameroonmama · 26/05/2008 19:10

We have a Jasper so naturally are biased, everyone tends to call him Jas. Obviously we are very posh.

castlesintheair · 26/05/2008 19:12

I've got a cousin called Jasper. His nickname is Jappy.

PuppyMonkey · 27/05/2008 16:35

We would have had Jasper if dd2 had been a boy!

LOL at Jappy!!

Cappuccino · 27/05/2008 16:36

www.jaspernationalpark.com/jnphist.html

We just took a trip to Western Canada and drove through the Rocky Mountains to British Columbia.
Jasper National Park is an incredibly awe-inspiring place.
Whenever I hear the name "Jasper" I think of the turquoise lakes and ruggedly beautiful mountains in Jasper, Alberta, Canada (-the province of my birth!)...

Personally, I like the name Jasper, and would use it for a child.(-actually, I had a pet cat years ago named JazzPurr)

JeremyVile · 28/05/2008 05:20

Jasper - not bad.
But the next kid I have will be called ChuffyKrumhorn.

It's a boy's name, right?

ChuffyKrumhorn · 28/05/2008 06:40

"Chuffy" & "Krumhorn":
Two PERFECTLY LEGAL SCRABBLE words.

*Come to think of it,I'm sure the old Scrabble dictionary holds a treasure trove of possibilities for prospective parents with regard to naming...
