toadandfrog · 03/07/2025 20:05

Dh and I can't agree/find a name we actually love.
These are ones he doesn't hate but has said don't feel like first names, and the ones I don't immediately hate.
And im sure he's only keeping a few for my sake

Elowyn

Mairwen
Odelia
Adoette
Adalia
Alianna
Elliana
Mariela
Alethia
Maeve
Freya / Maea
Medeina
Moryana
Astraea
Arabella
Mariam

We have a Madeleine. I like longer names like this, ones that make you go huh, clearly they own their own ponies and luncheon at the tennis club...
Please help!

Cassandra
Annalise
persephone

Well they are all very much of a muchness. And to be fair you've got a lot on the non reject list.

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/07/2025 20:14

I’d avoid quite a lot of your list simply because, whilst many are pretty, are going to cause endless issues for other people with spelling and pronunciation.

I really like Arabella and Alethia. Freya goes nicely with Madeleine.

Phoebe; Aviva; Meredith; Naomi; Ariella; Beatrice; Beatrix; Zelda?

ETA: I’ve always been fond of Alicia - although it still comes with the AH-leesha / Ah-LEE-sia conundrum.

SoManyDandelions · 03/07/2025 20:25

Alexandra
Stephanie
Cassandra
Francesca

These are all names that make me think of riding ponies to the tennis club 😁

ShittyGlitter · 03/07/2025 20:35

Harriet? Always sounded fancy to me

hyggetyggedotorg · 03/07/2025 20:43

None of those are particularly middle class pony club names to me.

Names that I would think that about:

Philippa/Pippa
Penelope/Penny
Felicity/Flick or Fliss
Annabelle
Florence/Flo
Beatrice/Bea
Tabitha/Tabby

(I keep editing because I know quite a few “horsey” people & keep remembering their DD’s names 🤣)

WitcheryDivine · 03/07/2025 20:50

I’m not sure about most of your list, did they come from a book? I had a weird book that suggested me all sorts of names not seen before or since.

For pony/tennis names and to go with Madeleine (gorgeous) what about:
Henrietta
Georgina/Georgia
Felicity
Morwenna
Jennifer
Matilda
Genevieve
Virginia/Ginny
Arabella
Pippa
Beatrice/Bea
Susanna

WitcheryDivine · 03/07/2025 20:52

Please don’t go for Adoette it reminds me of andouillette which is a French sausage which smells basically of poo

Way too many different names for different sausages in france, I didnt know half of them until filling out their forms for delivery and the menu in the wards 😅
So that's crossed off the list.

Also lots of names on here that have already been vetoed gaaahhh
Maybe we'll just call her dave and be done with it 🤔

Davina?!

Pippa

bumblebeedum · 03/07/2025 21:04

It’d be Elowen, Elowyn would be the masculine ending in Welsh.

Whatthefuck3456 · 03/07/2025 21:05

My daughter is called Pippa, we’ve still yet to meet another Pippa. Everyone comments on her name ❤️

Mariam (or Maryam) is beautiful and underused in my opinion. It fits nicely with Madeleine, close but not 'samey'. Freya is also lovely with Madeleine. Have you considered Harriet?

MiddleAgedDread · 03/07/2025 21:26

Madeleine and Penelope
Madeleine and Clementine
Madeleine and Annabel
Madeleine and Henrietta
Madeleine and Georgina
Madeleine and Isabella
Madeleine and Claudia
Madeleine and Josephine

OP - None of the names on your list sound like upper-class, that i think you are aiming for. The weird spelling specifically makes it sound like made up names, and wannabes…
Don’t do it to your child. She’ll hate having to always be misspelled and needing to correct people.

You have one traditional longish name - there are plenty in the same genre. Just give it a but of time and look at normal names again.

comoatoupeira · 03/07/2025 21:40

Clementine! Perfect with Madeleine

Please feel free to correct any spelling!
Also, I'm not saying they're specifically posh, just not the regular sarah, claire, sophie names and certainly not mckenzie and brooklyn.
I normally research deeper into spellings once a name has been chosen. These are just ones that I've read and don't immediately hate and then dh has gone and taken more off.

Of your list Arabella works well with Madeleine imo - well known, lengthy with nice nickname options but not overused. I’m not sure about most of the others on the list as they are by and large much rarer than Madeleine and many of them will always have to be spelt out (although I do admit a soft spot for Alethia). Or are the opposite and quite trendy/popular like Freya, Maya and Maeve.

Names that fit your style criteria to me (other than Arabella) and work well as Madeleine’s sister would be names like Juliet, Serena, Josephine, Coralie, Verity, Cecilia, Rosalie, Louisa, Felicity, Claudia and Antonia imo.
