I absolutely LOVE Marianne. I would be petitioning for it, if I were having another baby, which I'm not. I also really love Diana, and am surprised it's not in use more. So elegant.

Nooo not ready for those 🙈

I reckon Betty, Polly, Enid, Esther, Pearl, Maggie, Sylvie, Nora, Lilian

These have already been back for ages

My name is mentioned on this thread.
I think Barbara, Caroline, Fiona, Jennifer, Julie, Marianne, Eleanor and Helena are due a comeback

Eleanor and Helena are mentioned quite regularly in the baby name threads, and, to a certain extent, Marianne. So I'd say they've already been back for a while.

Barbara sounds very mid 20th century but actually I like it. David Mitchell the comedian /actor and Victoria Coren Mitchell have named their daughter Barbara I believe.

I also agree with a pp that Shirley has a lovely sound. It was most popular in the 1930s I suppose, because of the popularity of Shirley Temple.
DD (early 30s) was at uni with a Shirley, a Chinese girl. She had a Chinese name too of course, but it's common for Chinese people to also use a Western first name that they often choose themselves (not their parents) and I suppose she just liked the sound of Shirley. After she began living in the UK she said she noticed that if her name was called in the street, a lot of old ladies would turn round! Time for a comeback for Shirley though maybe.

I teach a Pearl, Sylvie and Norah. Though those names aren’t super popular yet.

I think Dawn is a lovely name with lovely connotations.. it might need a few more years yet though

I have a 5 year old Susie (short for Susanna), I love it! We sometimes call her Big Suze as well 😂

Mistyglade · 03/07/2025 21:09

Claire is basic and reminds me of Cluuure thanks to Cilla Black. I wonder if a baby Maureen or Doreen will ever be born in the next 10 years.

So long as it's not Silence!

I love a virtue name also.

We briefly considered Temperance for a girl. And once someone on MN suggested Deliverance which I thought was truly epic and would be my nom de plume (sp?) if i needed one. (Other than for Mn of course).

My favourite ever colleague was a Beverley now aged about 50. Kind, smart, supportive. So the name has great connotations for me,

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 03/07/2025 21:28

Although not a favourite of mine, I don't think I've ever seen Vera mentioned as a name due for a comeback. It was probably of it's time.
I do know a toddler Joyce, which surprised me but has grown on me too. Perhaps that is worthy of revival?

24Dogcuddler · 03/07/2025 22:06

My name from the 1960s and Mum’s from the 20s aren’t appearing in the lists. Can’t say I’m surprised. Never liked my name and use the shortened version.
My Mum’s name always sounded better in a Scottish accent but we aren’t Scottish!

PizzaSophiaLoren · 03/07/2025 22:11

I saw a little Edith this week. She have been between 3 and 4. She was curious, sweet, and lively. I’ve never known the name on a child before, but it suited her perfectly.
I’d quite like to see Joan, Rose, Jane, Margaret, Hilary, Josephine, and Christina again.

BatsInSpring · 03/07/2025 22:24

Louise is my middle name, just like half the women my age in the UK...
It's a great name though. I'm growing fonder of it. Much nicer than my first name, I'm sure that will have it's time again though.

Well Verity seems to be popular so it's not much of a leap to Vera... I could see it coming back. I think when it was popular it was considered a bit exotic as Vera is an Eastern European name isn't it? I wonder if it's still in use over there?

Joyce though still has a dated vibe to me. My parents (80s) know a few. I don't find it attractive, but I don't mind Joy though.

I have a Romanian friend (we live in London) and her daughter is called Vera.
