I agree with some of these. It's amazing how people will sneer at a name just because it was more common in a generation older than them, or even names from their own generation! And then go on to have yet another Isla or Ava.

I am 60 now and still love some names common in my own generation - Sarah, Susan, Deborah, Alison, Louise, Amanda, Claire. And Julie! Love Julie as a pp said. But no people can't possibly have that, can they, it would have to be Juliet or Julia at a pinch. Just because they associate it with older women, the horror! Of course they forget that in France Julie IS the classic form of the name.

From the generation above me, I agree that Pamela is actually a very nice name, also Patricia, Barbara, Mary and of course Sylvia.

But not Beverley, urghh, surely that one will never return!

Lilith
elsie
iris
valerie
alison

RubyBirdy · 02/07/2025 22:53

I love Shirley, but no one ever seems to agree with me!
Susannah / Suzanne / Susie is lovely
Kelly
Annette / Annie
Judith / Judy
Christina
Sarah
Sherrie
Sasha and Maria always felt like the cool older girl names to me growing up so I’ve always been a fan of those two names.

TizerorFizz · 02/07/2025 22:55

Gertrude, Irene and Ethel.

InterestedBeing · 02/07/2025 22:56

Claire is such an awful name.

Clare/Clair/Claire just seems nothingy and very dated.

No. Cla(i)re is such a lovely name, simple and classic with a beautiful meaning ('light') . Yes it's not long and frilly, girls' names don't have to be. It makes a good middle name too.

OK, it was very popular in the 60s, 70s and 80s, so what?

Caroline, Alison, Nicola, Christina

Love Lauren but you don’t get many little Laurens these days, it was super popular in the 90s..

MrsSethGecko · 03/07/2025 08:10

I met a 3 year old Susan in the Easter holidays! And I know a 6 year old Deborah.

I

Claire is lovely. It is no more 'nothingy' than currently fashionable one syllable monikers like Eve, Mae and Rose.
I'm sure it will have it's time again, and probably fairly soon. These are the 'vintage' names of the near future!

It was! So many Laurens. I once met a Loren. What a beautiful spelling but she will always be correcting people.

I think Claire is probably the nicest name that’s been suggested. Names like Ruth, Stephanie, Amanda, Sarah, Susan, Louise, etc are beyond dull. Maud is truly heinous, though.

Belinda

@BatsInSpring
Claire may sound lovely if pronounced correctly. I went to Primary school with one and know a couple of adults with the name.
Where I live it would typically be pronounced
“Clurr” ( rhyme with blur) though.

Caramelty · 03/07/2025 15:57

Every Joan I have known has been a grumpy bossy nightmare so no to Joan.

Jackie
Cindy
Wendy

Those should come back.

Your list sounds like a nursery school register (except Enid). All the others are all in use and have been for a few years.

Absentmindedsmile · 03/07/2025 16:26

Beverly just reminds me of Victoria Wood. And her ‘Beverleh’

newrubylane · 03/07/2025 16:30

BootballJoy · 01/07/2025 18:17

I think it'll be names like Barbara, Margaret, Joan. Maybe Ethel, Phyllis, Anne, Gertie, Marjorie, Bertha, Sylvia.

Basically same era as the current Elsie, Ada, Vivienne, Mabel but on the less pretty side.

I wish Beryl would make a comeback but the bikes might have killed it off:(

They're not quite the same era. Ada and Elsie are more 1910s/20s. Marjorie and Barbara you're moving into the 30s and 40s more. Obviously some overlap but it's definitely a slightly time shift.

carpool · 03/07/2025 16:50

I am 70. Names from my era of school friends were:
Nicola
Elaine
Linda
Deborah
Ruth
Yvonne
Janet
Janice
Carol
Sally
Pamela
Patricia
Christine
Susan
Diane/Diana
Lynne
Anne/Ann
Helen
Barbara
Judy/Julie
Marion
Sylvia
Penelope
Eileen

There were probably more but those are the ones I remember.

miniaturepixieonacid · 03/07/2025 16:59

I think most well used names do come back every couple of generations as people start to name their children after their grandparents.

Ones from the current 'old lady/man chic' style that haven't particularly come back (well, they might have in trendy, London areas, idk!) but I think are lovely/cute:
Avril, Ada, Clarice, Dora, Effie, Ida, Judy, Martha, Primrose, Rita, Ruth, Sorrel
Edwin, Gilbert, Jerry, Kenneth, Marvin, Melvin, Percy, Roger, Vinnie, Walter

Ones from more recent generations that I think should come back just because they're great names I never hear on little children right now:
Amy, Bronte, Bryony, Cassandra, Claire, Hayley, Laura, Miranda, Miriam, Melissa, Nicole, Natasha, Philippa, Robyn, Rhiannon, Saffron, Susannah, Tanya, Vanessa
Anthony, Alistair, Ashley, Declan, Dominic, Jeremy, Joel, Peter, Robert, Simon

But I think most of that second group will be back in another 20-30 years.
