I have been gathering opinions on this forum for a while now and find it very difficult to understand which names are considered nice and lovely… would you please name three of your favorites?
Modern and not overused. Thank you

Define what you consider modern. Most of MN favours classic, traditional names.

maddiemookins16mum · 29/06/2025 18:14

Gregory, Matthew and Luke.

Those that sound modern without feeling old school…

I'd say on the whole traditional names are favoured on here, but tastes will vary a lot.

I'll go for Felix, Tristan and Stefan. (Tristan is on someone's list on another thread today for names you'd never call your children! So it really is a matter of personal preference.) None of those are modern though.

PlumpAndCircumstance · 29/06/2025 18:22

Finn

Henry, Edward, Nicholas, Nathaniel, Spencer, Jack, Oliver, Dylan.

ginasevern · 29/06/2025 18:37

David, Luke, Nicholas, Frederick, Marcus, Matthew for starters.

I would look at names that have stayed consistently popular enough to not be associated with a particular generation. Alexander, Benjamin, Henry, James, Thomas, William, etc. or Elliot, Joshua, Lucas type names if you don't want "royal family vibes".

CarpetKnees · 29/06/2025 18:54

Why not give us some examples of names you consider "modern without feeling old school" then we might be able to help.

It strikes me that very many the most popular names over the last few years, are actually names of my Grandparents and Great Uncles and Aunts.

Jack, Arthur, Stanley, Archie, Fred(die), George, Alfie, Reggie, etc etc.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 29/06/2025 18:55

Phinneas
Timothy
Jonathan
Sebastian
Tristan

When we were expecting, Christopher was the top of our list but I think I prefer Christian now.

Mumofgirls2017 · 29/06/2025 19:28

well it’s very subjective! It’s up to you and OH if relevant what you choose. My favourite ‘modern and not overused’ would probably be

Fletcher
Caspian
Rio

Songbird54321 · 29/06/2025 19:33

We would have chosen James for a boy. My second choice was Albie/Albert followed by Thomas.
I would think all of them would be somewhat popular though.

manicpixieschemegirl · 29/06/2025 19:43

Asher
Cian
Isaac

Some of my current favourites are - Toby, Luke, George, Max, Jacob / Jake, Finley / Finn, Fred, Arthur, Nathan, Sebastian / Seb, Edward / Ted, Benjamin / Ben, Thomas / Tom, Samuel / Sam, Zachary / Zach, Adam, Dylan, Evan, Louis, Leo, Oscar.

Lots of these are quite traditional rather than modern and some are very popular, but I love them anyway 😊

Enzo
Rocco
Teddy
Luca

ReallyReallyReallyAm · 29/06/2025 22:09

Lachlan.
There is one of these at school & I think it's lovely.

If my 2nd was a boy, then he was going to be Jasper.

Also love Solomon & Sawyer.

Sandmaennchen · 29/06/2025 23:16

ConstitutionHill · 29/06/2025 23:27

I chose by seeing which worked best with our surname and really it’s just a bit of a gut feeling, not really that logical! Good luck with choosing! 😊
