Why are names so hard?! Please help us find a name for a baby boy!

Baby boy is due in November and we are really struggling - I know we still have plenty of time, but we’ve been thinking about it for years to no avail.

We have a 3 syllable Polish surname beginning with “R”. We’re both British and baby will grow up in the UK, but we have Polish speaking family here and in Poland so a name that “works” in both languages is important to us, although will likely use the English version.

If possible, we’d like something that isn’t too off the wall and yoonique but also something that isn’t going to land him as one of four in a class…appreciating that most of these are already very popular or are creeping up the charts so that may not be an option!

Currently the list includes:

Caspar (English spelling)
Sebastian
Elias
Cassius or Cassian

One of us likes and the other doesn’t:
Jacob
Lucian
Roman
Nathaniel

All suggestions are welcome because we are tearing our hair out! We just keep seeing the same names over and over and nothing feels even remotely “right”.

I have an Eli and a Lincoln both gorgeous names I think and not very common

ToadRage · 29/06/2025 12:57

I love Caspar. Simon (husbands name) is one of my faves that I think I very underused, it's not too unusual but while there may be another in the school you may not have another in the class. I remember one from primary school and there were only two (including my husband) at uni.

Clementine87 · 29/06/2025 17:06

Jasper or Elliott!

RebeccaRedhat · 29/06/2025 17:16

My Polish friend has 2 boys called Lukas and Mikah

Kiki25 · 29/06/2025 17:30

My daughter wasn’t named until 5 days old . I had plenty i liked just none suited her when she was born and both my boys were named after their birth also

roshi42 · 29/06/2025 17:35

Ooh, I love Cassian! Most of your others I am hearing a lot and think are quite popular, but that’s rarer to me. And I love Cass for a nickname.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 29/06/2025 17:50

I like them all - especially Cassian and Lucian - other than Roman, which has gone a bit hello mag.

Only Jacob has been very popular but the rest are popular/popularish right now, other than Lucian.

Anton
Bartholomew
Philip
Michael
Julius / Julian
Gabriel
Gregory
Andrew
Damien
Ignatius
Martin
Dominic
Nicholas

I think all these have Polish versions? - I guess anything broadly Christian does? And they aren’t overdone here right now.

Alexander, Thomas and Leon are obvious ones but all being rather done to death over here at present..

I have a 3 syllable Polish surname (doesn't start with R though) and I have 3 boys.

I don't have any Polish speaking relatives over here either so not sure if it'd work in Polish.

But one of my boys is called Seth - it goes well with my surname. The other first names and middle names are all very Welsh so probably wouldn't be suitable for you.

CheshireCat1 · 29/06/2025 18:16

Luis

emziecy · 29/06/2025 18:30

I'm much older, have 3 boys. I teach at an international school abroad and have a Polish Bruno in my class.

Other names I like (sorry I don't know how well any would work in Polish) are:

Enzo
Arlo
Zak
Max
Ezra
Josh
Lukas
Samuel
Lando
Elias/Eliraz
Isaiah/Isaac
Kristian

Good luck and congratulations 🎉

Patryk Patrick

CarpetKnees · 29/06/2025 19:07

With a 3 syllable Polish name he is always going to have to spell out, I'd go for a really well known, easy to spell first name

Mark
Jack
Peter even

theadoory · 29/06/2025 20:32

My DS is called Kasper. He has Danish ancestry, so the K makes sense. I thought K was used in the Polish spelling of it too? Maybe that if so :-)

TaraRhu · 29/06/2025 20:48

Casper or Cassius

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/06/2025 20:51

Kristian
Kristopher

Aristophanes (this is literally what autocorrect suggested for Kristopher so I couldn't leave it out 😆)

More great suggestions, thank you! I think part of the issue we’re having is that DH’s family is jam packed with boys/men, so a lot of the names mentioned are already taken and we’d prefer to avoid a duplicate (eg Tadek, Filip/Philip, Marek). Mine is predominantly female so we don’t have as much to avoid.

The Polish spelling of Caspar is Kacper, and while I love the K I think the “c” in the middle will be a pain for him in the UK (my friend Dawid has a nightmare with people really not understanding how to say or spell his name) and it would feel a bit odd to me to choose a name that exists in both languages but choosing a Danish/German spelling (which is a shame because Kaspar is great!)

I do like Ezra and Seth - I think I quite like Hebrew boys’ names generally so might need to experiment with some and see if any click!

Also very glad to see most of the names on our existing list are MN approved Grin

Sorry for the en masse reply rather than to individuals but I really appreciate your input. Hope you’re having great weekends and haven’t found the heat too tough!

Ezra is great!
My suggestion would be Joe.

Mh67 · 29/06/2025 22:35

Wincenty was a polish kid at my work. Lovely name

mintydoggyv · 29/06/2025 22:38

William

theadoory · 29/06/2025 23:52

Ezra is really common now, there’s loads of Theos, Reubens and Ezras in nursery at the moment, would avoid.

Just a few nice but not eye-rollingly common ones which spring to mind:
Artem or Artemis
Willem
Auden
Cosmus
Ivar
Noam
Alexander
Justin
Florian
Damien

NoNameMum · 30/06/2025 00:01

These are names which I like, which would also work well in English and Polish
Antoni/Antony
Aleksander
Jakub/Jacob
Leon
Daniel (I work with a Polish Daniel)
Oscar/Oskar
Lucas
Adam
