Baby boy name conundrum- help!

jaffacake20 · 24/06/2025 22:11

Hi everyone!

Expecting our first and much wished-for baby in October. We’ve known since our NIPT at 10 weeks that we’re having a baby boy, but 14 weeks on and we are no closer to agreeing a name! We tend to prefer more traditional names, his middle name will be Joseph after his brother, and surname begins with R and we don’t want alliteration so that rules out any R names.

My favourites:
Samuel
Jacob
Henry
Ben (probably Benjamin on BC)
George

Also like Jack, Miles, Luke and Elliot but not quite made it to my favourites list yet.

DP’s favourites:
Jonathan (would be called Johnny day-to-day)
William
Owen

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Matthew
Thomas

Try each name with the surname but not with the middle name. Do the same with the diminutive if there is one.
Sam Robson
Samuel Robson
Jacob Robson
Jake Robson
Johnny Robson ...

Isaac?

I like your choices though, not quite so keen on your husbands. I would avoid Benjamin with Joseph as a middle name due to initials and think Jacob Joseph is a bit too samey.

Love Ben and William.

What about James?

We have similar tastes. In the end I have brothers Henry and Edward. So Henry is my favourite from your list :) although I think Samuel Joseph sounds better x

Agree that you can not have Ben Joseph, and I would avoid any names than lend to a nickname with the J, - JJ, TJ, CJ, AJ, DJ etc

Henry is lovely.

William is fab, it’s just so timeless as along with Thomas and James it’s the only boys name that has never left the Top 50 in England and afaik has had similar sustained popularity in most other English speaking countries too.

It’s also surprisingly international so would serve him well if he travels- it’s Top 10 in the Scandinavian countries as well as Top 100 in about a dozen others. And of course thanks to William Shakespeare, it’s familiar enough to pronounce and spell even in countries where the name’s not well used in itself.

And the other William namesakes are just so interesting and plentiful from the Conqueror to Wilberforce to Blake to contemporary ones like Gates- you are spoiled for choice. Can you tell it was top of my boys list? 🤣 (others on the list included the aforementioned Thomas and James, as well as Edward and Alexander if it helps).

Of your other choices I also like Samuel (or rather I adore friendly sounding nickname Sam and don’t mind Samuel), I think elegant Henry has its charms and I feel Owen is surprisingly underused considering it’s nice sound and that it fits so well with current trends.

I also love Johnny but personally only as a nickname for very classic but now underused John (I know Jonathan is Biblical but it looks like a smoosh between John and Nathan to me -I do like Nathaniel though if going down that route).

Stefanosgirl · 26/06/2025 01:25

From your list 0P, I like Samuel and Henry.
From your DP's I like Owen, but where I'm from it has been popular for quite a while.
I also like Elliot.

Milosc · 26/06/2025 01:36

Don't worry OP, it will come to you. I had a whole list of names when my DS was born and we ended up naming him something entirely different once we held him. It sometimes helps to write the names out on paper with the first, middle and last name to see how it looks. Someone once told me think about how their name will look on a desk plaque or business card. That helped me to pick the name combinations for both of my DC. Congratulations on your soon to be sweet baby boy ❤️

My DP is called Jonathan so I am biased but I think that is a lovely name. His nn was Johnny growing up, however he now goes by Jono as an adult (although his family still call him Johnny).

ToadRage · 29/06/2025 13:01

Sorry don't like your partners list, from yours definitely Henry, my brothers name.

LiteralLunatic · 29/06/2025 13:16

You can’t have Ben(jamin) Joseph and give him the initials BJ, poor child!

Jack, Jonathan and Jacob would give him the initials J J. He may well end up with that as a nickname at school, which you might love or hate.

I don’t really like Eliot, it’s too faddy for me. I think it will date. Owen and Miles are nice enough but not in the same classic, biblical tradition of your other choices. The others are all lovely 🤩

jaffacake20 · 01/07/2025 15:27

Wow, thanks everyone for your replies!

I had completely missed the BJ issue with Ben, so that might move down the list a bit! Miles has also been moving up the list a bit in the last few days! I expect we will end up with a list of 3 or 4 names, some he likes and some I like, and then see what he looks like when he’s here!

I think Samuel is my ultimate favourite, and DP hasn’t suggested any other names for a while, so I might broach this option with him again…
