I pronounce Theo as Thee-o

And Matteo as Matt-e-o

Teo is Teo (not TayoConfused)

NormaSears · 24/06/2025 16:42

When is he due @Tkoko ?

Why not call him Fyodor?

THEE-o (th like in thing)
Mah-TAY-o but Teo would be 'Shouldn't your name have an h in it?'

mat-TAY-o. Why is it weird? Andrea is And-RAY-a. One of my former colleagues has a Matteo.

How do you pronounce Italian name Matteo?

Ma- tay- oh

Nooo, it’s definitely not Mah-tayo!

I say Matteo as Ma teh oh

There’s no AY sound!

NormaSears · 24/06/2025 17:08

@Zebralie ,OP asked 'How do you pronounce Italian name Matteo?' so I replied.

You might be misinterpreting posters' phonetic renderings of the name. There are so many non-phonetically-pronounced letter combinations in English that there can be many different ways of trying to write down sounds! For a Brit, 'Mah-tayo' is a pretty reasonable rendering of the Italian pronunciation of the name 'Matteo'.

anon2022anon · 24/06/2025 17:10

I would assume that Teo and Matteo were Spanish/ Italian or similar, and would pronounce it Tay-o / Mat-tay-o

For many English speakers, 'eh' and 'ay' potentially sound the same, depending on what word they are in.

NormaSears · 24/06/2025 17:11

/matˈtɛ.o/

And I replied saying that I would not pronounce the Italian name Matteo as you are. I would pronounce it as Ma-teh-oo. I find your AY sound weird.

crumpet · 24/06/2025 17:14

You may find that initially people might pronounce Teo as Tee-oh rather than Tay-o

NormaSears · 24/06/2025 18:36

I'd find Matteo very difficult to say without saying it as Mat-tayo.
If that makes me weird, so be it.

legoplaybook · 24/06/2025 18:46

Thee-o and Tay-o

Ma-teh-o looks like it would be a short e sound like the beginning of elephant?
In English Matteo would usually rhyme with mayo rather than Theo.
