Can I give the same name…?

I am struggling to understand if I can give to my son the same name as my brother did to his? Although there are so many names I just love the name Evan that my nephew has. Although we live in different countries I still don’t feel like I have a right to do it. What do you think?

No that's weird as hell

whosaidtha · 22/06/2025 10:18

I think it would be really confusing for the grandparents to have two grandchildren with the same name.

FortyElephants · 22/06/2025 10:19

No way!

DinaofCloud9 · 22/06/2025 10:19

I'm sure plenty of people will say it's fine and they have loads of family members with the same name but to me it would be a very odd thing to do.

Your parents would have 2 grandchildren with the name Evan and I find that strange.

Needmorelego · 22/06/2025 10:20

It used to be quite normal for cousins to have the same name as they were often named after a grandparent.
If your son and nephew aren't growing up together and are only going to see it other once a year at Christmas or whatever then it's fine.
On the rare occasion they're together they can just be Big Evan and Little Evan.

Enko · 22/06/2025 10:21

No i dont think thats a good idea

Ivan? Different enough but similarities

KookyDenimBalonz · 22/06/2025 10:23

Think 1st cousins with the same name is weird!
Is it the v sound you like?
What about Devin/Devon,Gavin, Nevin, Alvin, Calvin.
Personally I love Devin.

SunnyDayDream · 22/06/2025 10:24

Nope

Gloschick · 22/06/2025 10:26

I wouldn't be looking for similar names as that will still cause confusion eg Evan and Ivan. If you love the name, use it as his second name. Then find another name that you love for the first name. You will find one.

RosesAndHellebores · 22/06/2025 10:27

If you are in different countries, I don't think it's a big deal.

BeyondMyWits · 22/06/2025 10:31

If it is anything like my family, it would make visits a lot easier. "X, I mean Y, oh no Z... " should have called all the cousins the same ! 🤣🤣
But seriously, it would be a bit weird.

I just can’t find any that I like… that would be the only one really( that’s why I am suffering (

Definitely weird to do that.

I'm just thinking about this in regard to my Scottish ancestors in the 1870s.
Four sons and two daughters, born to Andrew and Mary; Andrew, John, Mary, James, William and Agnes. All married and had children withing 5 years or so of each other. They all lived in the same village. All their firstborn sons were Andrew, all their firstborn daughters were Mary.
Andrew Jr's children were Mary, Andrew, James, John, Agnes, William, Christian, Jane and Alexander.
John's children were Andrew, James, David, Mary, John, Jane and Agnes.
Mary's children were Andrew, William, James, John, Mary, Margaret, Agnes, David and Alexander.
And Andrew Sr had a younger brother James, so you can see how this pans out.

I wish they'd been more original in their choices!

I think it would be odd especially for grandparents..

What about Ethan?

I totally understand but nothing is so good for me as Evan… Ethan, Ivan, Owen, Kevin… they are just different

yes you can, cousins with the same name is a non issue it has happened in my family (not the exact name but variation, think Jack and Jaxon) never been an issue

caramac04 · 22/06/2025 11:43

I had the same situation and decided on a different name. Both dc would have had the same surname too and we lived close together.

feliciabirthgiver · 22/06/2025 11:46

Devon?

itcanonlygetbettercantit · 22/06/2025 11:46

I don’t see why people think it’s weird. If you like the name then I would use it. Given that they don’t live in the same country as you I can’t see what the problem is.

heatherwithapee · 22/06/2025 12:06

I had a cousin with the same first name as me. It was fine. We didn’t see each other particularly often as we lived at opposite ends of the country, and when we did, it still wasn’t an issue.

Just imagine that you already have a son named Evan so you can’t use it again…you will find another name.

if you were having twin boys or a second son you would HAVE to find another name @Tkoko so you need to change your mindset.

Zebralie · 22/06/2025 12:16

Of course you can’t!

Names are used to IDENTIFY people. You can’t name two grandsons and nephews the exact same name Hmm
