Can I give the same name…?

I am struggling to understand if I can give to my son the same name as my brother did to his? Although there are so many names I just love the name Evan that my nephew has. Although we live in different countries I still don’t feel like I have a right to do it. What do you think?

I think it is fine but then my mum’s two sisters both named their daughters the same name that my mum has. It’s a Welsh name and my mums parents were Welsh so they loved having big x and little x as granddaughters. There was a decent age gap between the girls which helped use size as the determinant!

I'm in the 'nobody owns a name' camp, but giving your child the same name as your brother's child is pretty weird. Especially in 2025. In this day and age, people don't usually give their child a name that 2-3 other family members have! (Or even 1 family member!) Not ones that are still alive especially!

I have 4 Andrews in my fairly close-ish extended family, (like aunts, uncles, first cousins, and second cousins...) Also 4 Davids, 2 Pauls, 2 Christophers, and 2 Stevens. Also 2 Julies, 2 Emilys, and 2 Louises. Half of them are named after their dad or grandfather/grandmother.. Youngest of the men is in his early 40s, and the youngest of the women is in her mid 30s. So it hasn't been a thing since the late 1980s really.

I would not do it @Tkoko It's very odd.

I just can’t find any that I like… that would be the only one really( that’s why I am suffering (

I find it ridiculous that you only like one name in all of the 151,671 that exist in the world. I had five boys and had to pick names for all of them! Imagine that...

Oh come on. Out of all the names in the world, the only one you like is your nephews?

you can use it, but it would be ridiculous.

thats exactly what happened to me… the others I like much less… and I find it less appropriate in my case… I understand you totally… but it just happened to me ((

I think it’s fine. I had a cousin who had the same name as his dad (John). He had a nickname but was also (in the family, say in Christmas cards) referred to by his first and middle names. So, love from Mary, John, John William and Tom (not their real names).

All good.

Are you planning on having more dc?

yes, I would love to but don’t think I will. The thing is that I live in Italy I am Slavic I need a name that suits well both cultures, is easy to pronounce for both families, has Slavic roots and the one that I like. I know everyone suggests Luca but it’s everywhere… and I don’t like it..

I think it’s strange and would never do use the same name (same middle name is fine) but I have 2 cousins with the same name who are also related so people do do this.

CopperWhite · 22/06/2025 12:59

No, it’s weird and unfair on grandparents, your brother, and the child who has already been named.

WaltzingWaters · 22/06/2025 13:08

A distant cousin of yours, fine. But your brother? Odd to name your child the same name as his. I wouldn’t.

Bevan?

What would we do? Not use the name is the roaring consensus

Yes. Well I have a boy and a girl but I picked two boys names and two girls names for each before they were born. Of each set there was always a front runner. For example Isla was my favourite but esme was my second favourite. I wanted to see my baby’s face before naming them too. Sometimes names just don’t suit them. My son was supposed to be Sam…he didn’t look like a Sam AT ALL. So I gave him a different name.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 22/06/2025 13:30

Etan?

DelphiniumBlue · 22/06/2025 13:36

I do think it’s a bit weird, there are so many names you could pick.
However, I have 2 nephews with same name, they are not the same age and don’t often meet , and it’s really not a problem. Family members are always clear which is which, and context clarifies which one is being discussed. If they both crop up in the same conversation, it’s “ big Joe “ and “ little Joe” , although little Joe is taller than big Joe these days, or “ my Joe/ your Joe/ Mike’s Joe.

Avantiagain · 22/06/2025 13:38

There are family names in some families but since that doesn't appear to be the case here, I wouldn't do it.

ELS20 · 22/06/2025 13:43

Personally I wouldn’t do it, however my husband is from a culture where male children are named after their grandfather, so he has the same name as all the first born male cousins!

Perfectly acceptable as they don’t live close and probably gave different surnames.
