Can I give the same name…?

I am struggling to understand if I can give to my son the same name as my brother did to his? Although there are so many names I just love the name Evan that my nephew has. Although we live in different countries I still don’t feel like I have a right to do it. What do you think?

Oscar?

out of interest how are you pronouncing Evan?

sevsnrems · 23/06/2025 16:14

My cousin and I have the same name. We grew up in different countries and saw each other 2 to 3 times a year. It was never a problem.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 23/06/2025 16:15

My mum has the same name as her cousin both named after their auntie that died

I didn’t say anything yet to them, because I feel it’s wrong.

You know it's wrong. It's an act of envy. It seems like you've started the thread so people will tell you it's okay, but it's just weird. I believe YOU currently believe it's the best name in the world, but it isn't. Are your thoughts a bit sticky at the moment? You shouldn't do it and it's likely to impact on family relationships, if that matters to you.

Blimey. I've seen some odd takes on MN, but this one takes - the biscuit!

My husband has two nephews called Philip. Nobody cares! There is quite a big age gap between them though, so I don't know if that makes a difference. And they live in different countries.

JillyGiraffe · 23/06/2025 18:32

Ethan is lovely! Or how about Ryan or Dylan?
I wonder if you’d have picked Evan if you’d had a child before your nephew was born..? Sometimes we like names because we hear them a lot and/or it’s someone we really like or love.

DinaofCloud9 · 23/06/2025 20:05

This is starting to sound like you just want to call him Evan because you're being awkward.

There's a million names out there and plenty of them are more interesting and actually Slavic than bloody Evan fgs.

Birdsongsinging · 23/06/2025 20:09

@Tkoko i would tell your brother you love it do much you thought about it for your own child but you would only do it if he doesn’t mind. If he does mind you then just have to get over it but if he is fine with it you can go for it! Little cousins Evans!

I know but there is no that I like that much, just searched through every single one

There are literally hundreds of thousands of names out there.

Like what? I am Slavic and live in Italy and would like a name which is not Leo or Luca and not Italian but easy to pronounce for both families. So many names maybe in UK but I am not connected to uk in any way… it has to be somehow related… Evan stood for Ivan… but with more international vibe let’s say …

Ivan has a far more international vibe than Evan.

It works everywhere and everyone is familiar with it.

Which ones do you consider more interesting? The Slavic ones?

Not just Slavic ones no.

I don't think you're actually being serious now. You're acting like a child who wants a toy just because another kid has picked it up.

Katherineryan1986 · 23/06/2025 20:38

Definitely don’t give your child the same name. My duaghter's husband has the same name as my husband and that’s confusing enough when talking about them!

AndStand · 23/06/2025 20:40

If you were expecting twin boys, what name would you choose for boy number 2?

Martibum · 23/06/2025 20:49

Tobi or Toby? Can work for all cultures.

BootballJoy · 23/06/2025 21:00

Evan and Owen are in the same category in my head, not miles away from Dylan.

Ivan has a totally different feel. Ivor? Caspar? Felix? Stefan? What does your partner think?

If you really are serious about Evan, I'd ask your brother for his thoughts. But it isn't like generations past where everyone was called Thomas and John so repetition didn't matter as much. Names are more individual these days so you need to be really sure.

I think it’s very subjective… we chose some names and not others for some reason… I came across many people here who struggled with the names…. I do understand what you are saying so not being ridiculous but trying to get some fresh look at the names
