I was watching a film recently featuring Nyree Dawn Porter.
I looked Nyree up and it's a Maori name originally spelt Ngaire and it means "flaxen".

I thought it sounds really lovely.
What do you think? Like or dislike? I've never come across this name in my world.

Prefer Nella. I don't really like how Nyree sounds or looks.

There was an author called Ngaio Marsh, pronounced NY-oh, but might not be the Maori pronunciation.

Lovely ❤️ I had a friend called Nyree growing up. She was lovely, clever and talented, and also mesmerisingly beautiful, so I associate it with her, which might make me biased 😂

I really like it!

Older people may remember Nyree Dawn Porter as Irene in the original BBC dramatization of The Forsyte Saga. She was not only a talented actress but also drop dead gorgeous. So for some educated grannies the name will have lovely connotations!

I like it.

I like it too.

I met a girl called Onei the other day, pronounced “onny”. I thought that was unusual and very pretty.

GiddyCrab · 11/06/2025 00:29

Awful.

LoudPlumDog · 11/06/2025 00:44

a very common name in NZ of course, always spelt Ngaire.

DramaAlpaca · 11/06/2025 00:47

It's lovely. I was going to mention Ngaio Marsh, but a pp got there before me. I wouldn't use without Maori connections, though.

Enough4me · 11/06/2025 00:52

Ngaire is such a beautiful name but unless you know it, it's like Siobhan - many would struggle to say/spell it.

Dated
