Do you know names that sound like Mirko? I really like how easy and modern they sound.

Sounds like a supermarket. Like Costco but European.

Furlong

That’s miles too different!

PanderBare · 13/06/2025 13:44

That's not strictly true, @Allseeingallknowing, about an 8th of a mile out . Makes me think of Furlough.

Mirko sounds rather like somebody out of Lord of the Rings (and therefore not modern at all). Are you a hobbit?

OofyProsser2 · 13/06/2025 14:57

Merkin?

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 13/06/2025 15:00

Short form of Miroslav

A bit odd unless you are mid/Eastern European I’d have thought

Merkin?

Ouch.

I'm half Slav and there are some Slavic names that I just wouldn't give to a child of mine: Bogdan comes to mind.

It does work the other way, however: Hughie sounds quite like the Russian for pr*ck.

Which names would you give your kids as half Slav?

It's something that's no longer relevant to me, but I suggested either Anka or Marina for a girl. My late husband vetoed both - and I can honestly understand why.

Uh oh, don’t watch The Thursday Murder Club when it is released then.

Okay…so why? Please explain.

Anka is problematic if your child goes to a school where rhyming slang is in vogue; Marina sounds like a place where you moor your yacht.
