Recently watching an old dvd featuring a little girl called Elspeth I think it's a really sweet name and one I don't think I've seen mentioned on here.

I think it’s beautiful.

To me, that sounds like someone mispronouncing Elizabeth.

It’s a variation of Elizabeth in its own right. Common in Scandinavia and Northern European countries.

Lovely name!
But potentially a lifetime of spelling it out to the Barista at Starbucks!

I never use my (averagely ordinary) name. They don't need to know it and I just give them a random one. I'll try Elspeth next time and see how they get in with it. Fine I imagine, but if not, who cares?
Elspeth is a nice name.

I know one and she's in her 50s, possibly 60s now.

It sounds American to me!Dunno why

The TV programme Elsbeth maybe?

BootballJoy · 21/05/2025 22:12

For my in the same category as Beth, Seth, Lilith, Judith, Meredith. I just don't like the sound of the ending.

helpmeCalifornia · 21/05/2025 22:15

There was an Elspeth in one of the toddler groups I took DD to a few years back ( so she’d be around 5 now). We’re not in Scotland and the mum wasn’t Scottish though dad or other family may have been.

There’s also a truly fantastic and inspirational Elspeth in my industry, she’s in her 60s now though so not a more recent example! Wonderful woman though and I do like the name a lot because of her.

Although I do find myself wanting to pronounce it Else-beth which seems to come more naturally to me somehow.

PanderBare · 21/05/2025 22:17

They're lispy aren't they. I don't like Theo and Thea.

Sounds a bit lispy and having heard it used a fair bit living in Scotland hasn’t made me any keener on the name. It’s a very matronly sounding name I feel

dragonfruitroar · 21/05/2025 22:28

I know of an Elspeth who’s 13 years old at the moment. Not a popular name but it’s nice enough. The Elspeth I’m thinking of is very sweet and quite polite.

17caterpillars1mouse · 21/05/2025 22:32

I love this name but then I am biased. 6 years of loving little Elspeth here. Nn Elspie but we also considered Essie

Nominative · 21/05/2025 22:34

I was at school with an Elspeth, so in my head it's a name for a really nice child with a lovely Welsh accent.

CrimsonVioletTeal · 21/05/2025 22:53

I like it, although I don't know any young Elspeths.

Stinkbomb · 22/05/2025 00:51

I know a lovely woman who is an Elspeth, also a young girl who is an Elspeth

coxesorangepippin · 22/05/2025 01:16

It sounds like a stutter

babyOnly · 22/05/2025 01:30

I love that name and called my first car Elspeth!

SammyScrounge · 22/05/2025 01:37

I like this name. It's a little bit different but not outlandish.

I know of a Hazel who must be mid to late teens by now. The others I know would be over 60. None of them are Scottish or have any Scottish connections.

My Mum (92, living in Scotland) must know some Elspeths, but I don't. I prefer Elizabeth, which is what I assume it comes from.

I’m 58, Scottish and my middle name is Hazel, we are a family who use our middle names but I’ve never particularly liked it.

There were a few girls at school who were called Hazel.

FlipFlopVibe · 22/05/2025 08:24

I have a friend from way back, who has a child called Elspeth. Mum has a lisp so it probably wasn’t the best choice. It’s relatively rare so that’s always quite nice to have.

lurkerchan · 22/05/2025 14:17

I knew an Elspeth in school who only went by Elfie. It's nice

mummysmagicmedicine · 22/05/2025 18:45

Our babysitter is Elspeth but she goes by El

InkWTF · 22/05/2025 19:36

I know an Elspeth in her 50s, one in her early 20s and another late teens.

It’s a bit like Ishbel for me, they are both pretty names but something not quite right about the pronunciation

user1492757084 · 23/05/2025 11:26

It was a friend's mother's name. Elspeth was a gorgeous and productive, bright woman; I like the name a lot due to her association.

Duckyfondant · 23/05/2025 11:35

Love it. Angus and Elspeth from the Family Ness TV show, mentioned previously. Fond memories

overwork · 23/05/2025 11:37

I went to school with an Elspeth. Her sister was called Maude. And this was in the late 80’s / 90’s so they were probably a bit ahead of the curve with the old names comeback!
