Recently watching an old dvd featuring a little girl called Elspeth I think it's a really sweet name and one I don't think I've seen mentioned on here.

My Great-Grandma was an Elspeth. She hated it so much she made her daughters and granddaughters promise not to use the name on their own children. My cousin has named her girl, Elspeth! Great-Grandma would be turning in her grave 😂

Needmorelego · 21/05/2025 11:30

I used to know one who must be about 13 by now.
No Scottish links as far as I know.
I think it's pretty.

CurlewKate · 21/05/2025 11:33

As someone who had a lisp until I was quite old and who now lives in Kent I would avoid all th names!

Polecat07 · 21/05/2025 11:37

I know one, never thought twice about it, its a lovely name and she's a fun woman in her mid thirties. There are much more 'granny' names, hers never struck me as one.

spiderlight · 21/05/2025 11:38

I know two, both Scottish, one in her late 40s and one in her early 60s. The younger one goes by Ellie. I've never met a little Elspeth, but then I'm not in Scotland.

JDM625 · 21/05/2025 11:38

I don't know any, but when I hear it, it sounds like someone with a speech impediment. I also didn't know if was of Scottish origin.

Personally, I prefer Elizabeth, but as its to name a cat, Elspeth/Elsbeth is fine 😆

Elspeth had a lot of love on MN names threads about 10 years ago. I know a couple who are early teens. They are in England rather than Scotland. I don’t think it was ever common enough in England to be associated with the granny vibe it has in Scotland.

We have Elspeths on both sides of the family but they are great grandmothers!

Yes, it did. So was slightly surprised when op mentioned this name.

I quite like it.

GreenMarigold · 21/05/2025 11:43

I think it’s a lovely name! I know an Elspeth who is around 8.

FancyCatSlave · 21/05/2025 10:21

There was one at nursery here. I don’t mind it but prefer Elizabeth, Eliza and Elsie.

I like Elizabeth, Eliza and Elspeth. Not Elsie, not even keen on it as a nickname.

YourChirpyFatball · 21/05/2025 11:45

I wasn't on here ten years ago so was unaware of it being popular then. I'm an oldie, never had a daughter and son is now 38. I think it's because Elizabeth, Elsie etc are often used and I've only heard Elspeth on that DVD.

Love this name, I used to look after a little girl called Elspeth and she was so sweet

Catlord · 21/05/2025 11:51

I love many Scottish names but unfortunately this is a 'not quite' for me. Not terrible by any means. Nice enough even. It's just very lispy. With the two sibilant parts /sp/ and /th/.

Looks lovely, doesn't quite sound right .

Whoarethoseguys · 21/05/2025 11:53

I love it and think it must be time for a resurgence

BarnacleBeasley · 21/05/2025 11:59

The one that people on MN love at the moment that sounds very dated from a Scottish perspective is Hazel. I think that's because all the Hazels and Sandras are in their 50s and 60s now. The Elspeths are in their 70s and 80s so it sounds more pleasingly old-fashioned.

paulhollywoodshairgel · 21/05/2025 12:02

I know and elspeth and she gets Elle and spethy

Snoodley · 21/05/2025 12:31

Friends of ours used it as a mn.

I considered Elsbeth but DH vetoed as "too twee" and " too expat Scottish"

Spethy is particularly awful.

ljhdsa · 21/05/2025 12:51

It sounds like someone needs to spit a hair out of their mouth in the middle of saying it.

ERthree · 21/05/2025 13:02

I live in Scotland so know a few, the youngest one i know is in her late 20s. I but it in the same group as Agnes, Senga and Jinty.

BangersAndGnash · 21/05/2025 13:04

I know two adult Elspeths and always viewed it positively

WashableVelvet · 21/05/2025 13:07

I like it. But in our area the L would become a W and the Th would become a F, and I think it’s a name that’s prettiest with its original consonants.

OurManyEnds · 21/05/2025 13:07

Spethy?!

I knew someone who has a baby girl they named Camille. Since day one they’ve called her Mealy instead. What are some people thinking 🤣

Annascaul · 21/05/2025 12:34

How nice of you to say!

OurManyEnds · 21/05/2025 10:10

Nicknames are weird. My kids get called whatever springs to mind when I see them. Sausage Chops comes up pretty regularly 🤣

Elspeth is a tough one for a nickname or shortened version. Elspie? Elsie? Urgh. I dunno, maybe that puts people off a bit.

One of mines was lamb chop, ridiculously fussy eater, will eat her own body weight in lamb chops though.

Doitrightnow · 21/05/2025 13:10

I've known one Elspeth.

I loathe the name but that's because I hate all names ending in th.
