Recently watching an old dvd featuring a little girl called Elspeth I think it's a really sweet name and one I don't think I've seen mentioned on here.

I like it, I had a friend called Elspeth at primary school and I always liked her name.
Lots of options for shortening it too, Elle/Ellie/Elsie/Beth

RuthW · 21/05/2025 17:27

I once knew an Elspeth. I love it.

Seymour5 · 21/05/2025 17:39

Snoodley · 21/05/2025 12:31

Friends of ours used it as a mn.

I considered Elsbeth but DH vetoed as "too twee" and " too expat Scottish"

Elspeth is Scottish, but Elsbeth is Dutch. They sound similar of course.

B0D · 21/05/2025 17:42

It sounds American to me!Dunno why

BebbanburgIsMine · 21/05/2025 17:45

I’m 58 and Scottish, can’t remember ever knowing an Elspeth, apart from in books.

Why does everyone always assume a name will be shortened? I loathe nick names or shortened versions, not everyone wants a shorter name.

My gran was an Elsie, short for nothing!

Nicknames are weird. My kids get called whatever springs to mind when I see them. Sausage Chops comes up pretty regularly 🤣

Elspeth is a tough one for a nickname or shortened version. Elspie? Elsie? Urgh. I dunno, maybe that puts people off a bit.

Omg! I still use that one, and mine are mostly young adults!
Also use it for the dog now

I think it's a lovely name. I had no idea it was particularly Scottish. The only one I've ever known was Dutch. It's rather ironic calling it old fashioned when people are naming their kids every granny name under the sun. I think Elspeth is rather timeless actually.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 21/05/2025 18:34

I have an Elspeth. I love it!

MMBaranova · 21/05/2025 18:37

Ethereal. Reads books.

Or feels that to me as the only one I knew would have wanted to help the school librarian but was too busy reading books.

I like Elizaveta as a name in that zone.

MrsKateColumbo · 21/05/2025 19:32

I know an elspeth who goes by els, ellie, and 'spth

Beautiful name

Spth…
God almighty. How do you even pronounce that with sounding like a spitting cat?

cramptramp · 21/05/2025 20:31

Lovely name.

MellersSmellers · 21/05/2025 20:32

Lovely name!
But potentially a lifetime of spelling it out to the Barista at Starbucks!

MaryMary6589 · 21/05/2025 20:41

I know an Elspeth in her 40s and she's really cool!!

I have a 1 year old Matthew and was surprised to find that Matthew is vanishing as a name.

unlikelywitch · 21/05/2025 20:55

One of my least favourite names. It screams ‘joyless Presbyterian’.

It also just doesn’t sound nice. In the same bracket as names like Morag, Shona and Maureen.

Rickeeeeeeeeee · 21/05/2025 21:03

Lisbeth is a lovely variation in my opinion. I have a friend called that.

To me, that sounds like someone mispronouncing Elizabeth.

PluckyBamboo · 21/05/2025 21:11

I know a few (in Scotland), both Elspeth and Elsbeth with nn Elsie.

All are around the 60 year old mark.

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 21/05/2025 21:11

Oh I know a few (nowhere near Scotland!). I find it a pretty lispy wet name but the women I know with this name are all very sensible straight laced and practical.

JollyGreenSnake · 21/05/2025 21:13

A good friend of mine has a 7 year old daughter named Elspeth. It's a sweet name for a lovely child, who definitely has a feisty side.

ChocolateGanache · 21/05/2025 21:14

I know one. But she gets called Ellie.
she’s 40. So not a granny.

The one that people on MN love at the moment that sounds very dated from a Scottish perspective is Hazel. I think that's because all the Hazels and Sandras are in their 50s and 60s now. The Elspeths are in their 70s and 80s so it sounds more pleasingly old-fashioned.

I know of a Hazel who must be mid to late teens by now. The others I know would be over 60. None of them are Scottish or have any Scottish connections.

My Mum (92, living in Scotland) must know some Elspeths, but I don't. I prefer Elizabeth, which is what I assume it comes from.

Marlena1 · 21/05/2025 21:20

People love Nora, Bridget and Agnes on here so I'm shocked they have a problem with Elspeth. I know one on her 40s and she is lovely...and cool 😎!

nameXname · 21/05/2025 21:29

I'm older generation, maybe, but to me in Scotland Elspeth is a perfectly normal name. Have met several.
It is, as others have said, one of the many versions of Elizabeth.

There is also the wonderful Elspet Grey (who played the ineffably distrait Blackadder's mum in early episodes of the saga ) - that's yet another variation.
