due towards the end of the year, which do you prefer? I’ve always loved olive but liking ivy now too! Worried I’ll regret not using olive though…

Olive is nicer. Ivy makes me think of banana bags and hospitals.

mathanxiety · 11/05/2025 15:49

I think Ivy has a lot more pizzazz than Olive, which I see as a very drab name.

Calliopespa · 11/05/2025 15:54

They are both quite nice and it’s hard to choose between them.

But for a similar name, what about Iris?

It’s a prettier plant! If I were a little girl, I’d rather be shown an iris and told that’s what my name means than an olive or ivy.

Readytohealnow · 11/05/2025 15:55

It’s nicer than Olivia.

NannyR · 11/05/2025 15:57

Personally, I really dislike Olive, as the PP said, it seems so drab, the first thing that comes to mind is greeny-brown oily fruits.
Ivy is better, but quite popular.

DancingFerret · 11/05/2025 16:02

Neither. Sorry.

LizzieBet14 · 11/05/2025 16:02

Definitely Ivy.

Blueplu · 11/05/2025 16:16

Sorry, olive is a terrible name

DramaAlpaca · 11/05/2025 16:23

I like both but slightly prefer Ivy.

RitaAndFrank · 11/05/2025 16:27

Ivy is really cute. Olive is dreadful.

Reddelilah · 11/05/2025 16:39

Olive 🫒 is awful

Avocadosandlimes · 11/05/2025 16:40

Love both!

HairyToity · 11/05/2025 16:41

Love both! Do either of them sound nicer with surname?

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/05/2025 16:53

I love Ivy, if you don’t mind how popular it is? Olive is a nice alternative if you want something more unusual (although it does seem to be a bit of a marmite name on here!)

ballroomblue · 11/05/2025 16:58

Ivy, yes, Olive, no. Olivia is nice.

BoleynMemories13 · 11/05/2025 17:17

I prefer Ivy, out of the two. Olive may be a lot less popular, statistically, but it's close to Olivia which is incredibly popular and both easily shorten to Liv. There will be an awful lot of middle age Livs around in 40 years time. So I wouldn't read too much into Olive as an individual name being the much less popular of the two.

I love the suggestion of Iris. The same vibe as both, but a lot prettier.

WtafIsThat · 11/05/2025 17:35

I don’t like either.

Ivy is so popular and blends in with all the millions of Avas and Evies. Also, I just don’t like it.

Olive is so drab.

stopringingme · 11/05/2025 17:50

Love the name Olive.

Purplecatshopaholic · 11/05/2025 18:13

Drab plants and drab names. Don’t understand the popularity of these at all, such ugly names.

Gia906 · 11/05/2025 18:18

I live in an area where it seems every third 7yo is called Olive. Hearing it out loud so much has made me realise it doesn’t sound nice at all. I’d go for Ivy out of the two but agree there are many nicer floral names. I also think Ivy is a bit like Holly in that I’d only choose it for a December born.

Millie90 · 11/05/2025 18:26

Olive ☺️. Both beautiful names but there aren't enough Olives about.

I agree about the sound.

It sounds a bit slippery and gulpy - a bit like a lizard swallowing a whole quail egg.

But I don’t especially dislike it (on other peoples children. )

Aren't you a treasure...

Emanwenym · 11/05/2025 18:36

Neither. One's a drab colour and the other is a thuggish weed.

Neveragain35 · 11/05/2025 18:40

I love Olive! Ivy is lovely too but it is getting a bit more popular. Also love Iris as an alternative.
