My last name is Douglas and my wife's is O'Casey (we're from england). We're not sure which surname would be best for our first child.
I would like to know your opinions on which one sounds better: Philip George Douglas OR Philip George O'Casey?...

I vote Douglas.
But you could also double barrel? Or have Douglas as a 2nd middle name ?

AubernFable · 08/05/2025 20:17

I much prefer O’Casey! Phillip George Douglas O’Casey also sounds nice just having it as a middle name instead.

I like Philip George Douglas O'Casey, either double barreled or using Douglas as a second middle name.

Using both surnames will simplify travel for both of you as parents and also for the child. Don't drop either, is my advice therefore.

Yup

O’Casey is a great name

Use Douglas as a second middle name.

NuffSaidSam · 08/05/2025 23:08

I like O'Casey best, but you can add Douglas as a second middle name so you both get your names in there.

Philip O’Douglasy

You’re welcome.

Christ0nABike · 08/05/2025 23:11

Phil O’Casey does sound a bit pillowcase-y

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 09/05/2025 01:34

Philip George Douglas O’Casey for sure. It’s splendid

Douglas either as a middle name or as part of a double barrel

This is true

Phil is a bit grim though anyway.

Pip?

Which works until you have a daughter next…

Emanwenym · 09/05/2025 11:16

@BangersAndGnash, I know several women with a surname as a middle name. It's usually a family surname from the mother's side.

Siblings would be something like David Andrew Owen Evans and Sarah Margaret Owen Evans.

Lots of people have their mother's maiden name as a middle name. It's quite common to have a surname as a second middle name. There's no reason a girl couldn't have this.

Douglas O'Casey is a great name for a boy.
