Is Francis too old fashioned? Is it too girly for a boy? Nn would be Fran

My girls are Beatrice (Bea) and Maeve

Do you mean Frances (girl name)? Francis is the boy version I think. I love it, (both the girl version and the boy version) but I know one and she hates it. She is fantastic though. She goes by Franny

Girlmamaplus1boy · 08/05/2025 19:45

@ByeByeByeee no expecting my first DS, I would use Francis for a boy but nn Fran rather than Frank

Think he'd need to be a strong character to pull that off as a teenager in a standard school.

Firsttimebabymummy · 08/05/2025 19:47

I like it

Forgottenmyphone · 08/05/2025 19:47

I think Fran is too girly. I’ve only ever come across female Frans.

BuffaloCauliflower · 08/05/2025 19:47

Francis is fine, shortening to Fran is too girly though, it’s never a boys name. Nickname for Francis would be Frank or Frankie.

Ah sorry! How about Frah? I know a Francis nn Frah and it works

Not Fran I don't think. Too girly and close to gran

This. I can’t imagine a more wet name tbh

LeedsZebra90 · 08/05/2025 19:50

Agree with ppl, Francis is lovely but Fran is quite feminine (this may be as I only know female frans though). Frank or Frankie as a nn is nice, but to be honest Francis in full is great.

We had a teenage Francis intern with us 10 years ago, I didn't think the name seemed odd/ too old fashioned at all.

Mumofoneandone · 08/05/2025 19:55

Love the name - classic and unusual. Only male Francis I know is nn Fran........

user2848502016 · 08/05/2025 19:58

I really like it, I think it’s making a comeback. Fran is traditionally a girls name but I like it for a boy too, it sounds quite unisex to me

PurpleChrayn · 08/05/2025 20:05

A wet and wimpy name. Very unpleasant.

Perzival · 08/05/2025 20:17

I love it and see it as a strong name. The only Francis I've known was anything but wimpy. I wouldn't use Fran as a nn tho.

Much prefer ‘wet and wimpy’ names like Francis than hyper ‘masculine’ ones like Hunter or Jaxon. It’s beautiful and classic, Francis gives me the vibe that he could be an author, lawyer, scientist or musician, from today or 100 years ago imo.

Girlmamaplus1boy · 08/05/2025 20:52

@AubernFable thank you, I love it too but understand it is not to everyone’s taste, never thought of it as wet or wimpy though

Me either! However I absolutely hate the idea that raising a boy that is soft, sensitive or gentle (because thats all they mean by it) is in any way a bad thing or reason for him to be bullied. I would consider that to be the best case scenario for a little boy, to be soft and kind is much more valuable than being rough and tumble.

Hohofortherobbers · 08/05/2025 22:21

Francis is good, fran is not

BootballJoy · 08/05/2025 22:22

Francis is fine, I don't like Fran for girl or boy, only met girls called Fran, and sounds too like Flan for me. But Francis itself like a PP said is a name with a great historical/literary legacy, a good choice.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 09/05/2025 01:41

Francis is getting quite popular I think

Fran is more common for boys in Scotland and Ireland than England, but it’s perfectly usable and will probably get more popular

comfyshoes2022 · 09/05/2025 02:49

I like it a lot. fWIW, I think it has a reasonably strong association right now with the most recent pope.

You can’t say never as that’s not true. I know male Fran’s.

urbanbuddha · 09/05/2025 05:26

I like Fran as a nn for a boy. It’s Scottish, isn’t it? Like Fran Healy.

My husband is an Irish catholic francis
