Is Francis too old fashioned? Is it too girly for a boy? Nn would be Fran

My girls are Beatrice (Bea) and Maeve

A wet and wimpy name. Very unpleasant.

My husband Francis is quite literally the least wet and wimpy man I have ever met 😂😂

ChocolateCinderToffee · 09/05/2025 09:53

Fab name and historically there have been some very successful Francises. Not wimpy at all.

Think he'd need to be a strong character to pull that off as a teenager in a standard school.

Agreed

OUB1974 · 09/05/2025 10:23

I have one... it was the only name we could agree on. Love it and it suits him.so much. He's usually Francis but often Frank (sometimes Frankie), which we all like too. It sounds a bit Irish, a bit Tudory, and a bit artistic to me, not "wet" at all!

Nevertrustacop · 09/05/2025 10:27

I love Francis. I would think of the late Pope though. I think that is a great association, but you may not.

My grandad was Francis, usually Frank but my Nan called him Franie (long a - Frahhny). My daughter is Frances but doesn't shorten it. I think it is a lovely name, and saw a bit of a resurgence in some areas - random people assumed we were Catholic and my daughter was named for the pope! My Grandad was a strong, caring man who was so much fun, and that's what the name means to me.

PraisebetoGod · 09/05/2025 10:35

I think it's a great name. Remember people will have good or bad associations with any name you will choose; so don't worry what people think! All that matters is you the love the name!

dogcatkitten · 09/05/2025 10:37

Francis shortened to Frank for a boy, Frances for a girl shortened to fran or less to my liking Fanny. Frank is a good strong name for a boy and Francis always sounds respectable and classy, so good options to chose between.

WendyFromTransvisionWamp · 09/05/2025 10:37

My teen DS has Francis as a second name. I think it’s a beautiful name, tbh I’m surprised to read the “wet & wimpy” comments. It was DH’s late DF’s second name too. No catholic or Irish connection at all.

MonsterBookOfTyson · 09/05/2025 10:51

Francis is nice but Fran sounds a bit girly.

jealy · 09/05/2025 11:26

beatrice maeve and fran .. lovely 🥰

BangersAndGnash · 09/05/2025 11:32

Francis is not girly
Fran is.

Frank or Frankie would be the usual boys nicknames.

But you can use the full name, Francis.

Pottingup · 09/05/2025 11:36

I really like it for a boy. The one I knew used Fran as a nn and he wasn’t at all wimpy. It seemed to work although I get why it might not in the abstract. Also Fran Healy from Travis.

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 09/05/2025 11:38

I absolutely love the name Francis

Littledidsheknow · 09/05/2025 12:51

Francis is an excellent name, classic, elegant and cultured. My DGF was Francis (Frank) and DH’s DF was a European variant! My DDs middle name is Frances.

Whilst Fran was traditionally a female shortening, the generation of female Frans are pretty ancient now, and the more recent Frans - in my experience, at least - are male. Girls named Frances and Francesca are more usually Frankie than Fran these days; again, in my experience.

Whatisityoucantface · 09/05/2025 13:45

It’s great! I think of it as quite a Celtic boys name. Fran is a good nn - Fran Healey for example

AllPlayedOut · 09/05/2025 13:47

Francis is dreadful. It’s such a wet and unattractive name and the shortened version is even worse.

Radiatorvalves · 09/05/2025 13:50

I knew a posh rugby playing Fran. He’d be mud 50s now. Suited him. Actually thinking about it I think his surname was Frances. Still called Fran though.

HugoYorway · 09/05/2025 14:51

There have been a few threads on the name Fran short for Francis, possibly from the same person, no other posts etc.

If you like Fran for a boy @Girlmamaplus1boy , use it.
I'm only commenting on the multiple posts because you'll probably get similar replies on each one

Maddy70 · 09/05/2025 14:56

I love it

rubyslippers · 09/05/2025 14:56

Love it
strong name and can be shortened nicely

I was just thinking that. I actually thought that this was a Zombie thread when I first saw it. I can’t imagine that there are that many people out theee who want to call a boy Fran.

HugoYorway · 09/05/2025 15:16

A few years ago there were several threads on the same name. They were all by the same MNer under different usernames, and it turned out that the MNer had named her baby months ago and was suffering from PPD.

CurlewKate · 09/05/2025 17:03

Funny that calling a girl a boy’s name is strong, and characterful while the merest hint of femininity in a boy’s name is wimpy and wet!
@Girlmamaplus1boyI would just call him Francis and not shorten it al all. He can choose if he wants a shortening when he’s older. My DS has 4 different shortenings for his name depending on context and who he’s with.

MirrorMirror1247 · 09/05/2025 17:06

My ex BIL is Francis, he sometimes gets called Frank, but he has another nickname that's used more often which is nothing to do with his given name, so that could happen with your DS.
