Is Francis too old fashioned? Is it too girly for a boy? Nn would be Fran

My girls are Beatrice (Bea) and Maeve

"think it’s twee and wet sorry"

Tamed a man eating wolf, what more do you want?

BatchCookBabe · 10/05/2025 19:59

No. I would never call a boy Francis.

AllPlayedOut · 10/05/2025 19:56

Florian would be my first thought.

You’re a genius, thankyou! I actually already like that name too.

Gloschick · 10/05/2025 20:02

I prefer Francesco. It is odd as I feel I would need to be Italian to use it as a name, but would be fine with Francesca!

powershowerforanhour · 10/05/2025 20:05

"I love a soft name, especially for boys, and now I’m trying to work out what Florrie could be short for (on a boy) because I love it! 🤣"

Flurry Knox in the Irish RM was Florence

imsosotired · 10/05/2025 20:12

I love the name Francis, but not so keen on the nn Fran.

Clearly not the name Francis.
My opinion is my opinion. It’s a meh name and I don’t like it

TheBeesKnee · 10/05/2025 20:18

I went to college with a Francis, he was cool and into photography.

It was on my list for DC2 but DP vetoed it.

I think unless you live somewhere particularly secluded and conservative it'll be fine.

Don't think you can plan on nicknames either, they tend to evolve naturally.

Jen579 · 10/05/2025 20:27

I really dislike it for a boy, it's a really limp, girly sounding name to me. I really like Francesco though and also like some other quite 'girly' names for boys - ie Rowan. But to me Francis is really wet sounding.

Goodness how horrid is that

This. I can’t imagine a more wet name tbh

Ah, those famous wet people from history--
Sir Francis Drake (circumnavigated the globe in the Elizabethan era)
Francis Ford Coppola (and his famously wet Godfather films)
St Francis of Assisi
Francis Crick (Nobel prize winner biologist)
Francis Bacon (kinda invented the scientific method)

Don’t forget the famous Franks and Frankies, including, but not limited to:

Frank Sinatra, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank Zappa, Frankie Valli, the Frankie of Frankie and Bennies…

Cissies the lot of them, clearly.

Nice name

Francis is fine, shortening to Fran is too girly though, it’s never a boys name. Nickname for Francis would be Frank or Frankie.

Fran Healy, (male) singer of Travis.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/05/2025 17:23

Love it. My sisters middle name is Frances.

Whiteflowerscreed · 16/05/2025 17:24

I love Francis (nn Frank) and Frances (nn Fran) for a girl. I do think you got to stick to the genders though. Fran would be a girl to me

TokenVegetable · 16/05/2025 17:32

I love Francis/Fran it’s a great name. DS3 has a Francisco in his year at school who goes by Frannie, it’s a rough school in special measures and nobody makes fun of it. His friend Clinton gets called card shop though.

Moveoverdarlin · 16/05/2025 17:34

I think it’s awful for a boy or girl. Really dated. Not a classic but just old fashioned. I know two females called Frances, both in their 70s.

HugoYorway · 16/05/2025 17:42

@Moveoverdarlin ,it's a classic. As in saint's name, pope's name, used for centuries, etc. You not like it doesn't stop that.

Ok. It’s an awful classic then. In the same way that John and Paul are classics, but you wouldn’t lumber a little boy in 2025 with those names.

I would describe George, James, Harry, William as timeless classics that still stand the test of time. Not Frances / Francis.

HugoYorway · 16/05/2025 18:08

I know a few young Johns. I like it. Paul's fine too, and Richard. I definitely wouldn't call it 'lumbering', and definitely better than Archie, Alfie, Luca or Arlo.

Thank you so much! I don't even know how anybody can decide that John or Paul (absolutely simple, straightforward, sturdy, pleasant names used for centuries) are somehow horrible names to "lumber" a child with . Of course I'm an old lady and in my day people would have never lumbered a child with Archie or Alfie . . . ..

JaneJeffer · 16/05/2025 18:53

Francis is a lovely name

Calliopespa · 16/05/2025 19:00

AubernFable · 08/05/2025 20:41

Much prefer ‘wet and wimpy’ names like Francis than hyper ‘masculine’ ones like Hunter or Jaxon. It’s beautiful and classic, Francis gives me the vibe that he could be an author, lawyer, scientist or musician, from today or 100 years ago imo.

Yes part of me agrees with this, and it is classic but I’m not sure I would feel I could run with it.

I do know a (very cool, very handsome!) Francesco?
