DH and I are expecting our first baby soon - a little girl.

Our surname is Darling.

Our absolute favourite name is Bella middle name will be Julia. Im worried Bella Julia Darling sounds too sweet?

Other options which we aren’t as sold on are Zara, Grace and Anna.

Thoughts?

My niece is Isobel nn Bella and taking her out you notice that every third child is called Bella, so I'd avoid on that basis alone.
Something more traditional would work Catherine/Kate
Alice

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 07/05/2025 08:07

Isabella?

TotemPolly · 07/05/2025 08:10

Names I'm really liking at the moment are Hannah or Leah , I think they go with your surname as well .

Taytayslayslay · 07/05/2025 08:14

How about Juliette, such a pretty name and would suit your last names!

Calliopespa · 07/05/2025 08:14

I actually quite like just Julia.

Could you go with a stronger first name and then use Bella as the nickname?

Arabella Darling
Annabel Darling
Isobel Darling
Mirabel Darling
?

Not keen on Bella Darling (makes me think of The Tweenies) but love these alternatives.

usererror57 · 07/05/2025 08:19

See I think you need to go with a longer name to detract from the Darling bit - I’m not a fan of Bella with the surname

Dorothy Darling
Matilda Darling
Juliette Darling
Henrietta Darling

I like these.
Maybe Mirabel might be a bit much with Darling( think it means wondrous) z

But the others are nice.

Annabelle Julia Darling is lovely and are names you had in mind anyway. She can still be Belle/Bella as a diminutive and you avoid the BJ issue!

I'm biased though as i have an Arabella who is known as Bel, Bella and (randomly) Bunny.

Avoid Grace. It's pretty but Grace Darling was a historical heroine so it's a big name to live up to!

Or you could just go full Blackadder and call her Bob Queenie George Darling. 😊

More seriously Kate is nice though.

Or indeed full Bruce Springsteen... Sherry Darling ... Hey, hey, hey, wha'd'ya say ....

Ghosttofu99 · 07/05/2025 08:45

Versions of Belle/Bella are really popular at the moment, I’ve seen a few babies with it. It is quite sweet.

Were you not tempted to go with Wendy Darling like in Peter Pan?

LookingForRecommendation · 07/05/2025 08:47

Zara Darling is really nice. Please don’t choose Juli - it’s grannyish and not in a stylish way. I have a granny name and HATE it. Your child will want to fit in.

jackstini · 07/05/2025 08:50

I agree Annabelle Darling is better and still go with Bella as a nn

Pemba · 07/05/2025 08:59

Isabel or Isabella Darling would be lovely and you could still call her Bella. But she would also have the Izzy option if she wanted, or the full name.

Same with Annabel or Annabella, gives Bella or Anna options.

Could also have Mirabel, which could become Bella or Mira (pronounced meer-a).

StartupRepair · 07/05/2025 09:04

Darling is a gorgeous surname. I would go Annabel Julia, nickname Belle.
Or Elizabeth, Katherine or Henrietta.

Snugglemonkey · 07/05/2025 09:07

Cheepcheepcheep · 07/05/2025 06:25

I love both of these options - personally I think it needs to be a 1 or 3+ syllable name. It’s the double two syllables that IMO make it kind of sing-song and overly sweet.

I would either drop Julia (even though it is a lovely name, or drop Bella (altogether, even Arabella etc). Even if Bella is a nn,she would still be BJ. Or you could have two middle names and put Julia second.

PicklesMacGraw · 07/05/2025 09:11

Bella Darling sounds lovely to me. Darling is a fantastic surname.

Darling is a very good surname.

Inspired from you list I prefer ..
Alice Julia Darling
Anna Julia Darling
Alanna Julia Darling
Kate Julia Darling
Claire Julia Darling

Zara rhymes too much with darling.
Grace Julia Darling is fine.

TossedSaladandScramblyEggs · 07/05/2025 09:28

I think Wendy Darling would be better 😉

AJ are good initials.

Crucible · 07/05/2025 09:36

Sounds gorgeous. I'd go for it.

HaroldMeaker · 07/05/2025 09:38

I love this name! Or Bibi Darling, maybe more rock star ?

BootballJoy · 07/05/2025 12:51

RosesAndHellebores · 07/05/2025 06:30

For the sake of the initials.as pointed out by a pp, perhaps not Bella Julia.

There are far worse names than Darling out there.

If you like Annabel and Madeleine, what about Caroline? It's very classic and due a renaissance. For a shorter name, I think Mary goes better with Julia than Anna.

Slightly more unusually, Xanthe and Tamsin both work.

I must confess, I was tempted to say Wendy (sorry).

Weirdly before seeing this i was thinking Caroline! It goes really well. I think Darling needs a really classic first name (Philippa, Harriet, Alexandra etc). Anna is good, Madeleine or Annabel (I prefer that spelling) are nice.

CoffeeWithHer · 07/05/2025 13:04

I LOVE it! I would of married him for the surname to be honest 😁

My DD has a hyphenated name but as she has gotten older, DD has dropped it from her CV and school and just known as the first name. I think it’s nice to be able to play around with your name if you can so I’d advise to have the longer Bella name and when she gets older she can have it how she wants.

How often to use your full name anyway?

Belle Darling sounds lovely and not so sweet.

AND congratulations!!! X

Hoolahoophop · 07/05/2025 13:34

Annabel Darling sounds lovely. But to you Bella
