How would you pronounce this name?

Taisa/Taissa.

I will tell you how I would want it pronounced once I have a few replies. Trying to gauge how complicated/annoying a name it would be.

Ty-eesa
don't inflict it on your kid. Apart from the constant annoyance of correcting spelling and pronunciation it's just a wishy washy non name. Too many vowels.

StrongLazyVague · 30/04/2025 09:00

It's irrelevant how any of us would pronounce it as the thread shows, the child would get umpteen different pronunciations. Which is not necessarily an issue in itself I have an unusual Irish name and English people got their head around it when I lived there, but the fact that you are giving two different spellings, which suggest different pronunciations, suggests you're not sure yourself.

Olika · 30/04/2025 09:00

Tissa as in ti in tiger.

Needmorelego · 30/04/2025 09:02

At first glance at just seeing them written down....
Taisa - Tye-sah
Taissa - Tay-sah or Tye-i-sa (rhyming with Melissa)
(I don't know why but that's how my brain thought)

CurlewKate · 30/04/2025 09:02

Is it a name from your culture, @JusttInCase?

Karmaistheguyonthechiefs · 30/04/2025 09:03

Tye-sa (tye as in tiger)

mugglewump · 30/04/2025 09:04

Putting my phonics teacher hat on - first is Tay-zah and the second option is Tay sah. Ay as in play, single s in the middle of a word is a z sound, double up for ss.

AlmostSummer25 · 30/04/2025 09:04

Tay-sa

but in reality, I would avoid using the name until you had already said it first.

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 30/04/2025 09:07

I would pronounce it like the end of Anastasia, but only because I know someone with this name, who uses Tasia as a nickname

Rightsraptor · 30/04/2025 09:07

Tie-eesa.

pimplebum · 30/04/2025 09:07

My daughters name is unpronounceable unless you are Irish and know the name

if you love it , go with it ! family teachers and everyone who uses her name will learn it how you want it said

the only time my daughters name is mispronounced is when she’s called out at doctors and hospital appointments not a big deal at all

ThatFlyIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/04/2025 09:10

Tah-ee-sah

YourWinter · 30/04/2025 09:10

Why oh why give a kid a name it will spend its entire life having to spell out?

My parents “personalised” the spelling of my otherwise normal name and it’s been a lifetime of embarrassment. You might think it’s edgy but the child won’t.

JusttInCase · 30/04/2025 09:22

Thanks everyone. It's basically as I expected.

It's a Ukrainian name, Cyrillic spelling is Таїса. I've seen it transcribed with s or ss. (There's an actress with the Taissa spelling)
Actual pronunciation is Ta-ee-sa - the isa at the end is pronounced as in Lisa.

For context: I have Ukrainian heritage and my first daughter has a Ukrainian name (but with a more obvious pronunciation) and we're debating whether to go with another Ukrainian name but there aren't too many that I love. My first choice would have been Larissa but my partner doesn't like it.

Thai - sah

TheFrendo · 30/04/2025 09:23

Like the weapon, Taser?

DiscoBeat · 30/04/2025 09:24

Ta-zah/Tay-sah

ginasevern · 30/04/2025 09:24

I think it's going to sound too much like taser (the thing the police use).

BangersAndGnash · 30/04/2025 09:25

The Ukrainian pronunciation is lovely.

But most UK people would need to be told how to say it.

This would be normal in London, to learn how to say a name.

pontipinemum · 30/04/2025 09:25

Well I could def say Ta-ee-sa if that is how you introduced your daughter to me. I just probably wouldn't spell it correctly if I didn't see it written down.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/04/2025 09:26

Taser - great if she joins the Police Force later. PC Taser!

DiscoBeat · 30/04/2025 09:26

Sorry just seen your update. Larissa is lovely. Could you alter the spelling so similar - Tayissa?

pontipinemum · 30/04/2025 09:27

@BangersAndGnash in fairness it is getting normal to have to learn to say a name even where I live here in ballygobackwards. I actually get slightly miffed if someone says 'just call me Mike, you wouldn't be able to say my name' at least let me try!

Definitely not trying to be edgy, hence asking the question first! Nobody has ever heard of my first daughter's name but so far everybody has automatically pronounced it correctly, and lots of people comment on what a lovely name it is.

I would have said Tay-Sa but Ta-ee-sah is much nicer! People will pronounce it wrong initially in lots of cases but once she has corrected them, it’s easy to say. Can you spell it the Taïca way so people know not to use an English pronunciation? Or just use the ï maybe instead of an i ?
