What's everyone's opinion on the name Flavia?

Makes me think flabby labia

Velvetbee · 29/04/2025 20:51

I really like it, I know a wonderful one who must be 70ish.

Baninarama · 29/04/2025 20:57

It's a lovely Italian name and works well in both languages from your family. It's also pretty much spelled as it's said, which helps. 90% of the posters on here don't like any girls' names unless they are Sophie or Olivia!

Middleagedstriker · 29/04/2025 21:04

How about Carla or Marie? Adele or Frida? Carina?

Henrietta863 · 29/04/2025 21:43

Sorry OP but I think of Brucie on Strictly introducing the pro Flavia. Have no idea why!

LilyJosephine · 29/04/2025 21:45

The only one I’ve ever met was pronounced “Flay- via” which sounds quite harsh. I do prefer the “Flah- via” pronunciation, but be aware OP that it’s such an uncommon name (at least in the UK) that you/she may have to put it with it being mispronounced whichever you choose. Flavia is an elegant looking name though and I do love the uncommon Ancient Roman ones - there aren’t enough Annia’s or Atia’s about either for example.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 29/04/2025 22:06

I knew a prof specialising in the Romans who had a Flavia and possibly an Augusta.

I’m not mad about it I have to say, there are nicer Roman influenced names.

Leafusbeus · 29/04/2025 22:10

I've only ever known one person with the name Flavio, the male version of Flavia.
The name means golden or light haired which actually suited this person that I know because he lives in the Netherlands and has fair complexion and blonde hair.
I think there are prettier sounding names and I don't know what it is, maybe it's the f and the v in the same short name, making it sound 'heavy'?

It would definitely be pronounced Flah-via where I live - they don't have the "ay" sound so would only say Flay-via if they knew she was half English and were aware that that's a potential pronunciation in English.

It’s the name of a boiler for a coffee machine.
Ask Mr Google “Flavia boiler” and you’ll find it.

It’s a nice name but maybe given the opinions on here, think again?

shalamakooky · 30/04/2025 06:58

Flabby Labia

Yeah, I think I've been suitably put off by these replies. Shame, I really like it.

Skoda Flavia? Is that a car?

A much more upmarket LANCIA Flavia !

but a common Romanian name

DecemberBackIn63 · 30/04/2025 08:18

Maybe we can find something else that you like.

Amalia?
Lina?

Both end with the same sound.

Zeitumschaltung · 30/04/2025 08:50

Ask people where you actually live. People in the UK (who didn't use Ecce Romani at school) can be quite suspicious of foreign names they aren't already familiar with.
It's a lovely name and will work great throughout most of Europe.
Flora or Livia would be alternatives if you want something that will go down better in the UK too.

I live in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. So she will mostly encounter German speakers but there are also a lot of native French speakers around. Randomly there's currently a large percentage of native Portuguese speakers at my elder daughter's nursery but it may be different by the time this one starts.

It makes me think of the Brazilian gymnast Flávia Saraiva which is a great association.

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 30/04/2025 10:16

It’s definitely a food additive. It’s doesn’t do well in English, especially in some accents. BUT if you don’t live in Britain it might not matter anyway!

OP, it's always interesting to ask others for their opinion on a name, which you did, and that's what you got, various opinions.
You really like the name, it's you who will speak it with love, and your precious child who will carry it with her in life.
We don't live where you do, so no worries about how to pronounce the name where you are, no comparisons to English words and if you love Flavia for your dear little girl, then that's all that matters, not what anyone here thinks.

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 30/04/2025 18:28

Too much like Flavela.. south American slum area's in cities.

Mandarinaduck · 30/04/2025 20:09
