Aiden or Caleb?

We’re expecting a boy but still haven’t found a name we both really love. We’ve now got two names on the list, but my husband isn’t too keen on either.
Aiden – he feels there are too many around, and he’s not a fan of the whole “-den” trend.
I’ve recently started liking Caleb, but my husband struggles with the pronunciation – he keeps saying “cal-lub” or "car-lub" instead of “kay-lub”...

I've not come across any Aiden's under about 14.

I've only ever heard Caleb pronounced Kaylub / Kayleb

Although neither would be in my top 10, they are both what i'd class as 'okay' or 'fine'. Nothing to dislike about either which doesn't help you at all. Sorry!

BertieBotts · 28/04/2025 00:05

Boy names are so hard. We have three boys and I joke we can't have any more because we would never find a name if we had another boy!

I wouldn't go for a name your husband can't pronounce.

Have you seen those apps which are like Tinder for baby names? DH and I found those quite helpful because they threw up some possibilities we hadn't thought to discuss.

I think there are so many pretty and interesting girls' names that boys' names are really hard - IME it helps to embrace the names you feel a bit more "It's OK" about because over time they can grow on you.

Since you like the "ay" sound on the first syllable maybe that's a good place to start?

DancingHippos · 28/04/2025 00:07

It's Kay- leb not kay-lub

Prefer Caleb myself but your dh needs to be on board

Gettingbysomehow · 28/04/2025 00:08

Aiden is much nicer. Caleb sounds like some amish American kid.

QuickPeachPoet · 28/04/2025 00:09

Don’t like Caleb. Aiden yes.
If you like the ‘ay’ sound, there is also Jason, Fraser, Nathan, Jacob,

notacooldad · 28/04/2025 00:10

What about Aidan if he doesn't like the ''den" vibe?

BertieBotts · 28/04/2025 00:11

E.g. other "ay" names

Jake/Jacob/Jay
Hayden
Fraser
Jason
Bailey (though, could be a girls' name)
Greyson
Mason
Clayton
Raymond/Ray
Nathan/Nate
Chase

falalalalaaaaaaaa · 28/04/2025 00:37

Love Aiden/Aidan. Less keen on Caleb, sorry.

user1492757084 · 28/04/2025 02:38

Would you both like ..

Callum
Adam

Moreteaandchocolate · 28/04/2025 06:01

I like both, probably would go for Aiden (which I don’t see as a typical “den” name, it feels classier to me)

I like the suggestions of Callum and Adam (I particularly love Adam).

hattie43 · 28/04/2025 06:24

Aiden on the basis I wouldn’t know how to say Caleb

BoleynMemories13 · 28/04/2025 07:27

If he doesn't like Aiden and can't pronounce Caleb it's back to the drawing board I'm afraid.

Callum could be a compromise. Similar style to Aiden, similar sound to how he pronounces Caleb.

Kayden would combine the two, but I really dislike that and guessing he will too if he's anti 'den' names.

BoleynMemories13 · 28/04/2025 07:28

Adam is a lovely suggestion!

MyUmberSeal · 28/04/2025 07:34

I can only picture the guy from ‘Clarksons Farm’ when I hear the name Caleb 🤣.

Firsttimebabymummy · 28/04/2025 10:58

If your husband isn't keen then both are a no imo..

Jacob, Adam Aron?

ambercabs · 28/04/2025 11:00

Why do you say ‘lub’ when it’s ‘leb’?

Justwingingit2005 · 28/04/2025 11:03

I have an Aiden. He is 16 and the only Aiden in his year at school.
We sometimes shorten it to Aid but none of his friends shorten his name.

BootballJoy · 28/04/2025 13:21

If you spell it Aidan it wouldn't be a 'den' name. For me it's in a very different category.

I've only heard Caleb Cay leb not Cay lub.

I think you both need to like the name though.

AlwaysWantingIceLollies · 28/04/2025 14:05

Prefer the name Aiden and I don't think it's in the same category as the Jaydens/Kaydens/Haydens of the world.

NefiBlw · 28/04/2025 15:51

Caleb - but I'd pronounce it Cal-eb. Kay-leb is the English pronunciation.
The tv chap is Kaleb

Aiden sounds like a middle-aged Irish man, or a UK teenager (Jayden, Kayden, Brayden ...)

Busted2006 · 30/04/2025 22:15

No to both

MadeForThis · 30/04/2025 22:29

Adrian?

uncomfortablydumb60 · 30/04/2025 22:47

Adam is one of my favourites and my DS3 middle name.
could you compromise on that?
Aidan( spelt that way) is lovely.
Callum?( my DS is 31)
