Viola is a lovely name - and if you're in England with mainly english friends etc, I don't think anyone will make the spanish connection!

Cello - lovely instrument, some great concertos written for it, but deeply silly as a girl's name I'm afraid

I like Ivy, too

marymungoandmidge · 18/05/2008 22:29

Bee

Saffron

Angelica

Camellia

MsHighwater · 18/05/2008 22:44

I do know of someone called Blue-Jean?

Re Cello- Sir John Barbirolli to an errant female cellist:-

"Madam, you have a magnificent instrument between your legs and all you can do is scratch it!"

Woollymummy · 18/05/2008 22:58

We have a flower and a bird, both of them chosen because they live in our garden. Bryony and Robin.

1dilemma · 19/05/2008 00:31

SO go on admit it Candida is number one?!
I liked Viola unitl EB posted Violet instead v.pretty

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/05/2008 08:12

Yes I have some thoughts on Viola and Cello - don't do it!!

Thankyouandgoodnight · 19/05/2008 11:48

Ok convinced - viola & cello removed from thought bank

Thankyouandgoodnight · 19/05/2008 11:57

ok......

My shortlist:
Violet (DH doesn't like)
Scout
Eden
Trinity (I don't like 'Trinny')
Dove
Isla
Martha
Ember (I'm not sure)
Emerald
Sorrel (DH not keen)
Poppy (DH not keen)
Clover (too frilly?)
Cinnamon
Lavender (too long?)
Juniper
Raven (DH says it's a superhero's name)
Ebony
Echo (but my DM has made it known she hates that name and I have never mentioned it to her)

You see - you are all being extremely helpful!!

I'd nab Violetta over Viola/ Violet
Or are they all destined to become Vi....

HonoriaGlossop · 19/05/2008 12:05

I absolutely LOVE the name Emerald and I think you should use it; it's gorgeous

I like alot of your list but I'm afraid I just hate with a passion, Eden, and Trinity, they are major Chav names

Scout is just so ugly

Ember and Echo are silly

all the others are much better but for me Emerald is the stand-out

Please choose it

lollipopmother · 19/05/2008 12:11

What about Scarlet? I love that name, I would've considered it if there wasn't a surname clash.

Gutted none of mine got onto your list! Nah not really, most of them were off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

Off your list I most like Poppy, Violet and Lavendar. Ember isn't good, it's a gone wrong Amber, and Juniper is weird!

cyteen · 19/05/2008 12:15

Verity

jeanjeannie · 19/05/2008 12:39

Oh lord - I'm at it all the time now...looking for names in 'things'. Hands off Verity - that's ours in 2 weeks if bump is a girl...! Saw the word Unity - went to school with a girl called that....but don't go for Eden - that's the name of our new shopping centre !!!!

Whatever you choose will be FAB!

Thankyouandgoodnight · 19/05/2008 14:38

How rude of your shopping centre!!

Is Emerald too......odd ?

OP posts:
Thankyouandgoodnight · 19/05/2008 14:39

I love Scarlett but I can't as a close friend nabbed that one

OP posts:
HonoriaGlossop · 19/05/2008 14:57

Emerald is not odd at all, compared with Echo, or Ember, or Scout!!!!!

I think it would be Em for short, wouldn't it most of the time, or Emmy....

but no, it is very unusual but I think it's beautiful

jeanjeannie · 19/05/2008 14:59

Emerald....is...well, ok....but I sort of want to say Esmeralda....but that's just me ! It's a better gem name than...diamondique. Friend works in a jewellers and a couple rang and asked how to spell it -as they'd seen a ring made out of it on QVC and wanted to name their dd after it... Imagine that being yelled in the playground.

LOVE, love, LOVE Isla....would've been my choice for next dc if a girl (along with Hope ,Honor or Verity) but dd1 is called Iris and it's too close. I also LOVE Violet...but then you can probably tell by Iris that I adore old lady names!

Good luck....and run away from Eden - unless shopping

FAQ · 19/05/2008 15:02

ermm

Felicity?

only one I can think of that's a proper word and a name that hasn't already been mention

LaDiDaDi · 19/05/2008 15:44

My views are

Violet (DH doesn't like), I do just hear Violent I'm afraid but that may just be me and in theory I think it's a very pretty name.
Scout; I love the To Kill a Mockingbird associations but my friends have just called their labrador Scout.
Eden; ok
Trinity (I don't like 'Trinny'); could be shortened to "nity"...
Dove; I quite liked this until I thought of the soap and other toiletries.
Isla; lovely, rising star of a name imo.
Martha; star peaking at the moment
Ember (I'm not sure); it sounds like you just wanted something a bit different from Amber and everyone else will call her Amber by mistake
Emerald; I like this, Emmie is a good shortening.
Sorrel (DH not keen); no, know a very dull woman with this name
Poppy (DH not keen); nice, very girly girl imo.
Clover (too frilly?); I think this is cool.
Cinnamon; silly
Lavender (too long?); depends upon your surname.
Juniper; cool, I think thais may be my fave
Raven (DH says it's a superhero's name); only good if you can be certain of dark hair as an adult.
Ebony; lovely but a bit chav if that bothers you
Echo (but my DM has made it known she hates that name and I have never mentioned it to her); absolutely awful imo.

EffiePerine · 19/05/2008 15:54

Viola is a flower as well as an instrument btw (heartsease)

I LOVE Verity, DH isn't keen at all (bah)

My2Monkeys · 19/05/2008 18:46

Candida (ok maybe not - but I actually know several women with this somewhat unfortunate name!)

Chardonnay
Peach
Sky(e)

My2Monkeys · 19/05/2008 18:48

Oh shoot, I'd only read the first page - I'm gutted that someone else came up with Candida first!

MsHighwater · 19/05/2008 20:16

I once knew a girl called Easter. Pretty bonkers name, really, but, knowing her as a child, I took it in my stride as did all my friends. Her father was a clergyman.
