Will people think I have named DS after the pope? He is due in three days time..
chosen name was Francis far before the news of the pope passing. I will call him Fran, Frano as a nn day to day.
Is it too close? Do I need to go back to the drawing board

Fran is generally used for Francesca/Francheska in my experience

WhiskyandWater · 23/04/2025 18:16

I knew a male Fran in sixth form eons ago, it’s fine OP.

RichWithNoSelfControl · 23/04/2025 18:16

Depending where you are in the world, many people will think you have a daughter.

ginasevern · 23/04/2025 18:19

Francis is a great name and I don't think most people would associate it with the Pope at all. However, Fran is always used as the girls' nickname for Frances or Francheska. I have never, ever heard it used for a boy and I think he would be somewhat ridiculed for this.

Needmorelego · 23/04/2025 18:19

Are you Catholic or live in a very Catholic area?
If not I doubt many people will make the connection.
When I read the Pope had died I didn't even realise his name was Francis until I read it.
Edit: Fran for a boy is fine.

Nevergotdivorced · 23/04/2025 18:35

If you did name him after the late Pope then what’s the problem?

He was a popular Pope and a good man.

Moreteaandchocolate · 23/04/2025 18:59

I don’t think the link to the Pope is an issue

cheapskatemum · 23/04/2025 21:57

I don’t think many will make the connection & if they comment on it you can put them right. I expect any comments will be shortlived, people are unlikely to remember in a year or two that Pope Francis died a few days before your child was born.

I have known male Frans and a Frannie (looks funny written like that, but it’s true).

Carshoppingnightmare · 23/04/2025 22:00

I think it's a lovely name. I didn't even realise the pope was called Francis! Fran from Travis is male, I think it is quite a cool nick name

SuperGinger · 23/04/2025 22:05

Great name

PrincessOfPreschool · 23/04/2025 22:54

Good choice. I love the name. I also like the girl version, Frances. Nickname could grow on me... It's very cool but I knew a girl Fran so it would take a bit of getting used to.

Nameftgigb · 23/04/2025 22:59

There was a girl called fran in my school back in the 90’s. There was a boy called Francis in my eldest DD’s class 10 years ago. Both were bullied unmercifully. It’s such a wet, poncy name. Francis is bad. Fran is worse. I’m not even sure how to form an opinion on ‘Frano’. I’d be willing to bet that that’s not what his peers will end up calling him though

Needmorelego · 23/04/2025 23:03

@Nameftgigb why were they bullied for being Fran and Francis?
They're both normal names.
It's like saying someone was bulled because they were called Sarah or Mark or similar really ordinary names.

I know a young man called Francis and he likes being called Franny. Cisco is cute too.

Buythekitkats · 24/04/2025 13:36

There's an older male Francis in my family, who goes by Fran. He gets called Frank so much that he stopped correcting people decades ago. I don't know if it's an accent thing or people just assuming as Frank is much more common.

Hollyhobbi · 24/04/2025 13:45

Lots of older Francis where I live but they all go by Frank!
