I have a Jude, he’s about to turn 11. It was something like 75th on the ONS list when I was pregnant but it had been my boy name since childhood so I was using it regardless. I know probably 3 Jude’s now, all younger, so it’s definitely getting more popular. I would still use it if you like it. Our 2nd DS has a far less common name, not met another yet although someone I went to school with has used it since but we’re only Facebook friends these days.

The same happened to me. I fell in love with a name when I was 18 and it was barely in the top 100 at the time. Nearly 10 years later, when I fell pregnant, there was no way I was not going to use it just because it was now in the top 20.

I have no regrets. It has never ever been a problem. It helps that I have a popular name for my age group too, so have personal experience of the fact it is totally not a problem!

I like it, though it is popular.

If that bothers you then.. Joss, Joel, Jethro, Jerome.. any good?

Please don’t call him Chester (the molester - but beyond that ref it’s just naff, like Lincoln.)

I have a 12 year old Jude and yet to meet another one if that’s of any help 😊

I think I only know one Jude irl. But if it's popular, that's not a reason to avoid it. Later in life it may be a name associated with the baby's generation. There are a lot of names associated with my generation that would seem very odd for a baby today. Choose the name you like!

LilyJosephine · 14/04/2025 00:10

Not too popular- just very trendy (and so may date), but most people don’t care about that -or a lot of the names in the Top 50 wouldn’t be as popular as they are and timeless classics like William, Edward, Thomas, George, James, Michael, Charles, Alexander, Daniel, Joseph for example would be the Top 10 instead.

Chances are your Jude will still be the only one in class if that’s your worry, there will probably just be others in school - but that could be the case with many names, as it’s all area dependent and unfortunately ONS don’t have their old table anymore where you could check how many of any popular name were born in your area last year 😢 (the differences were huge!)

And while it’s not a name I like personally, I do think Jude is still a lot better than Chester. Chester is a nice city, but it’s not a very nice name - it works much better in America imo (where the usual nn is Chet), it sounds a bit downmarket/celeb wannabe here imo.

I know 3 Jude’s and no Chesters. I love the name Chester.

RuthW · 14/04/2025 22:21

Jude isn’t popular where I live.

Marble10 · 14/04/2025 22:55

Not a popular name where I live either. I’m yet to come across a Jude! So it must be a localised thing.

Love love love the name Jude

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 15/04/2025 04:40

I've got a Jude in his twenties. Its a great name!

finallydecorating · 15/04/2025 05:44

DD's name is unusual in England. But she had one in her primary school class and one on the same road! The chances are against that, but here we are.

Meanwhile we've not met an Olivia.

There are so many names and you won't know that many DC. You really can't predict whether you'll know other Judes. Probably not tbh, but they won't be everywhere, it's not that popular. Nice name though, go for it!

RoundSquareWithTriangles · 22/04/2025 18:40

Jude is lovely.

More names are in circulation now than in the past, so even the popular ones don't get used as much.

I also really like Judd as an alternative. Also, someone else mentioned Joel ♥
