swallow??? swallow????? what is the world coming to?

seeker · 16/05/2008 09:24

Rowan
At a HUGE push, Swift, if it saves the poor girl from being Swallow!

Piffle · 16/05/2008 09:25

Emer is nice Irish I think ember is dying burnt stuff... Not nice

ninedragons · 16/05/2008 09:37

Problem with Swift is that she'd inevitably turn out to be a lovely squidgy little heffalump.

seeker · 16/05/2008 09:41

I know, ninedragons, but that's better than being the butt of extremely rude jokes for the rest of her life!

HereComeTheGirls · 16/05/2008 09:49

if the was to me..you did ask what we thought of it..was being honest!!

Thankyouandgoodnight · 16/05/2008 09:49

And that other thread about 'Moth' made me look twice - quite unusual I thought....

The was an 'oh dear I can feel a rethink coming upon me.....'

Why not go the whole hog and have Peaseblossom and Mustardseed as well!

SNoraWotzThat · 16/05/2008 09:54

I don't understand why names have to be unusual
Its the child that is unique IMHO.

I like straightforward names, no messing. Give them a nickname for quirky. So no.

edam · 16/05/2008 09:55

What on earth is going on with name threads atm? Is there some sort of competition: 'Who can post the wierdest name and trick posters into answering as if it was a real question?'

HereComeTheGirls · 16/05/2008 10:00

ah ok, sorry

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 16/05/2008 10:03

No.

Thankyouandgoodnight · 16/05/2008 10:05

You lot do get ants in your pants don't you??

Some of us don't like straightforward or names we've been listening to for years on end. It's not personal, it's just that as you don't seem to like to 'off piste' ones, we don't like the what we would refer to as 'dull' ones. I was kind of hoping that people would be able to see this suggestion (as with others in this topic) from the OPs point of view rather than their own and try and help me (and others) work through it.

e.g. it's fine to say that Ember is very similar to Amber / sounds a bit morbid because of dying embers etc - that's actually helpful believe it or not. But to suggest names like Kate or Emma or have a pop about whether or not we think our children are too special to have a 'proper name', is just daft. I think.

Having said all that - you have made me titter with all your responses which is no mean feat this morning I can tell you!

Thing is, I think there is a happy medium here. Names don't have to be dull and boring OR completely off-piste. I agree that we probably don't need any more Emilys, Joshs, Callums or Ellies for a generation or two, but are Wireless, Carpet and Vladivostok the only alternatives?

PrincessPeaHead · 16/05/2008 10:22

If you like swallow, and have a willow, how about a Sorrel? Similar sort of sounding to Swallow without the unfortunate connotations, also a plant (herb), Willow and Sorrel sound like sisters, etc etc

PestoMonster · 16/05/2008 10:28

I think Ember is how a South African would pronounce Amber. Not sure I really like it that much, think PrincessPeaHead's suggestion of Sorrel is nice and quite a clever alternative too.

WigWamBam · 16/05/2008 10:33

There are plenty of interesting and unusual names you could choose from - the choice isn't between a boring name which you hate and a comedy one which everyone else will laugh at.

Even when trying to see this from the OP's point of view, as you put it, all I can see is a name which makes it appear that you can't spell, and which has huge potential for causing bullying and embarrassment for a little girl.

And, you know, you did say "hit it" ... which really does invite people to be honest with you. If this is what people here think, it will be amplified in real life.

WigWamBam · 16/05/2008 10:33

Now, Sorrel is lovely ...

PuppyMonkey · 16/05/2008 10:36

Ember is simply how an Australian person would pronounce Amber.

DiscoDizzy · 16/05/2008 10:37

No, would prefer Amber.

seeker · 16/05/2008 10:41

Come and join my gang, wigwambam!

Surfermum · 16/05/2008 10:44

What about Laurel or Seren (which is another mumsnetter's dd's name and is lovely).
